Three Things Thursday – 2

written by Parita 12 Comments

I think I’m going to make ‘Three Things Thursday’ a regular weekly post.  I love sharing things about my week I would otherwise never write about!  I tend to be more of a topic blogger, but with this particular kind of post, I feel like I’m sharing a special (albeit random) glimpse of my life.

With that, here are this week’s three (totally random) things…

1. Niel (my brother-in-law) and his girlfriend are visiting us this weekend!  I’m so happy he made the spontaneous decision to fly down because he’s the only one who hasn’t been to our place in Miami.  Niel came down for a soccer game right after we got married, but that doesn’t count in my mind because we were living in a not-so-happening part of Fort Lauderdale at the time.  I’m thinking a beach day is definitely in order this time around, along with other fun activities/restaurants/etc.

BROTHERS!

2. I got a hair cut.  While this isn’t normally newsworthy in any sense of the word, I had to mention it because I got 5 (ish) inches chopped off.  My hair hasn’t been this short in over two years, and I’m absolutely loving it.  I even asked for long bangs (who am I?!).

Please ignore the fact that I’m terrible at taking these kinds of pictures (and my crazy eyes!).  I don’t have another one to share, and my hair has been in a bun all week because of the rainy weather (go figure!).

Short(er) hair + an amazing straightner = a few extra minutes of sleep!

3. The Mindy Project will be airing six additional episodes this season!  I believe they only had 15 scheduled at the beginning of season 3, and as a hardcore fan, this was VERY disappointing.  When I saw the following update on my Facebook feed, I texted Thea right away, as she is the one person who knows and understands my obsession with this show!

If you don’t watch already, I highly recommend you jump on the bandwagon!

Your turn to share – I want to know 3 Things that you’ve been thinking/doing about this week! If you’re a blogger, write a post and link back to one or all of the hostesses; Raj from Pink Chai Living, Nisha from Love Laugh Mirch, or Salma from The Write Balance.  Then share a link to your post (not your blog’s home page). Why You Should Watch The Mindy Project and What May Happen If You Do

written by Parita 10 Comments

I’ve mentioned a couple of times now that The Mindy Project is my “new” show.  I’m a little late to the party (as usual) but glad my sister forced me to join.  And because I’m such a huge fan now, I decided to dedicate an entire post to the show.  Hopefully, if I’m persuasive enough, you all will join me and also become obsessed so that we can talk about it on the regular!

Why you should watch The Mindy Project…

  1. It’s funny.  Starting with Season 1 Episode 1 I found myself cracking up and shaking my head multiple times.  And not only at the outright “this was meant to be funny” moments but at the subtle one liners as well.  Once you get to the know the characters, even their body language will make you laugh.  The writers of this show are exceptional at what they do.  They’ve created characters (and situations) that are funny, very nutty, and brutally honest all in one.
  2. The storyline.  Without giving too much away, the show follows Dr. Mindy Lahiri (played by Mindy Kaling) as she sets off to find the love of her life.  On this journey, we find out that Dr. Lahiri loves rom-coms and believes her life will play out like one.  But of course we all know that nothing ever happens the way it does in the movies, and Mindy’s disastrous love life depicts that as well.  But this is what makes me want to watch the show.  You fall in to the “I have to know what happens” trap.  Trust me.  The questions “Does Mindy find the one?” and “Is it going to be who I want it to be?” will haunt you for the first two seasons!
  3. The characters.  I want to be friends with each and every one of them.  The only other time I’ve felt this way was with the cast of Friends.  The thing I love most is that they’re all flawed and crazy, which makes them even more appealing.  They’ll remind you of people from your own life.  And like with real life friends, you have to give some of them a chance (or a few episodes!) before fully investing in the relationship.  But it will happen…trust me!  And if nothing else, Chris Messina (Dr. Danny Castellano) will keep you coming back for more – such a cutie!

What may happen if you start to watch The Mindy Project:

  1. If your significant other is not watching with you, he/she will not understand why you can’t just stop at one episode.  He/she may also vie for your attention as you sit and watch  episode after episode.  He/she may also roll his/her eyes a lot.  And then when you try to have a conversation about the show with him/her, you will be told to not give anything away because he/she may want to watch “one day.”  [And I’m totally not speaking from experience here!]
  2. You may end up watching all of Season 2 in less time than it took you to get through Season 1.  I’m not going to admit publicly how much time that is…let’s just say it’s more than 24 hours and less than 48.  I know what you’re thinking.  Don’t judge me!
  3. You may watch a few episodes more than once even though you literally just saw them.  The Season 2 finale was epic!  And again, no judging.  This is what happens when your husband is studying all weekend and everyone else and their moms is out of town.
  4. You may end up being “that person” who can’t and won’t shut up about her new favorite show.  I’ve already texted three of my friends about it.  And just so you know, they are all fans as well!
  5. You may also turn into “that person” who has an official countdown to when their show is back with a new season.  Just so you know, I am not there yet.  But there’s no telling!
  6. You may reread Mindy Kaling’s book (Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?).  I haven’t done this yet but do foresee it happening in the near future.

Soooo…did I convince you!?

What’s your favorite TV show right now?  If it’s The Mindy Project, I will be sending a virtual hug and high five your way!

Friday Favorites

written by Parita 4 Comments

Happy Fourth of July! I hope your weekend is full of good people and good food (my favorite things!).

Fireworks - 4th of July
The following [Friday] things are making me extra happy and excited for the next couple of months!

With it being the 4th of July, I (along with a lot of other people) have the day off! We don’t have anything too exciting planned for today or the weekend, but it was just nice to sleep in a little.

Soooo…The Mindy Project. Last time I checked in, I was a few episode in to the first season. As of today, I am done with Season 1. I know, I know! This is me though. When I get really into something (aka obsessed), I am all in. Call me crazy…I own it!

Side braids have been by saving grade in the gross humid weather we’ve been experiencing. My coworker, Thea, and my sister have inspired me to embrace the braid! And the best part is that with the help of a little anti-frizz cream and bobby pins, it’s a totally professional look!

This past Monday was our second wedding anniversary and TODAY is our nine year dating anniversary! While we aren’t celebrating until after Vishnu’s boards, I’ll probably spend a good portion of the day reminiscing.

July 4, 2005!!!

Normal (not Focus T25) strength training is back in my life, and I’m loving it!!! I did a Best Body Bootcamp full body “pull” workout on Wednesday and a full body “push” workout today. Ummm…I’m sore and so happy! And this time around, I’m using heavier dumbbells and focusing on my form more than anything.

I am heading to Chicago next week for a work related training and am very much looking forward to seeing my coworkers! It’s been too long.

From Chicago, I’ll actually be headed back to Atlanta for nine days. I’m going to spend a few days at home with my parents…and then I’ll be fully immersed in Roshni and Samir’s wedding celebrations!!! My best friends are getting married!!!!! AHHHHH!

Team RSVP
Then in August I’m* going to have a few visitors. My friend Purvi is coming down for a girls’ weekend, and I can’t wait to show her my hood! A week or so later my parents are coming down to visit me for about 10 days. Woot woot!

*I say “I” because Vishnu will be doing an away rotation in August. So glad to be having visitors while he’s gone.

Have a great weekend!

Highlights From My Trip Home to Atlanta

written by Parita 11 Comments

Trips home always feel super quick. There’s never enough time to do everything any of us want. While this trip was similar in that way, we still did quite a bit all things considered.

– After picking me up from the airport on Wednesday, my mom and I drove to Vishnu’s house to have dinner with his parents. I wasn’t going to have another opportunity to see them on this trip, so we went straight there. It was fun as usual! Our dinnertime conversations never fail to make me laugh (A LOT!).

– My dad and I went back to the airport to pick up my sister on Thursday. That evening, when my parents left for a henna party, my sister and I went to Cold Stone for ice cream! I texted my sister last week telling her I wanted Coffee Oreo ice cream at some point during my trip. When it came time to decide where to go, Cold Stone was the perfect place because we could both create whatever flavor combinations we wanted. I went with coffee ice cream, Oreos, and fudge. Aekta got a mix of cake batter and cheesecake ice creams with brownie pieces.

– We made a day trip to Clyde, North Carolina on Friday. My mom got an email about a temple located on Mt. Soma, so we decided to make it a family trip. The drive was really scenic with the tree filled mountains being my favorite! The temple itself was on the smaller side, but the surrounding views were absolutely beautiful. If we lived closer, I could see myself visiting regularly.

– We tried two new restaurants over the weekend. Burger 21 was a Yelp find that turned out to be a winner all around. My mom and I split two different veggie burgers, while my dad and sister got their own chicken burgers. We also split sweet potato fries and regular fries (these came with a tasty cheese and ale sauce). I definitely want to get a milkshake next time…the Oreo one was calling my name!

On Saturday, my sister and I decided to take my parents to Antico in the city. Aekta and I had both been before when the restaurant first opened in 2009, but since my parents never really venture into the city on their own, we decided to make the drive down. And it was so worth it. The brick oven pizza is some of the best I’ve had in Atlanta. And the entire city agrees – not only was there a 15 minute line to get in, but we had to grab a table across the street because there was no indoor seating at the actual restaurant. YUM!

– My mom made Upma (a savory cream of wheat porridge of sorts), and it was so freaking good. It’s a little spicy, creamy, and very hearty. When I went to take a picture, my dad looked at me and said, “Parita, it’s just Upma.” JUST UPMA!? Maybe to him. Haha. I had a couple of (huge) servings on Thursday as well as on Saturday.

Upma

My mom also made her famous lasagna on Sunday before my flight. Her “secret” ingredient is a can of refried beans that she adds to the sauce to help thicken it up. It’s pretty much one of my favorite things to eat when I come home!

– I am officially obsessed with The Mindy Project. My sister, knowing I would love the show, asked if I wanted to watch it with her. She even offered to start with season 1 episode 1. I am now four episodes in and in love with Mindy. She’s a little annoying and I’m often embarrassed for her, but there’s something about her that’s easy to relate to and so fun! Seriously, start watching this show if you don’t already. My sister put it best when she said that it’s the perfect way to end a bad day because you’re guaranteed to laugh!

– And finally, I have some sad news. After 12 years of togetherness, my nose ring and I broke up. As I was brushing my teeth on Thursday morning, I noticed my nose ring looked funny. After a closer look, I realized it was literally stuck in my nose. When I tried to pull it out, the area around it started bleeding. After almost 1.5 HOURS, a few tears, some pain, and a little blood, I managed to pull my nose ring out with a pair of tweezers. My poor mom was by my side the entire time helping in any way she could. We were both SO relieved when it finally came out. And while I’ll miss having a nose ring, I’m not going to get a new one. I’m done! Thursday’s experience was pretty traumatic.

Have a great Wednesday!
