A Milk and Cookies Date [7]

written by Parita 7 Comments

I took an unintentional blogging break this past week!  It was definitely not planned, but I suppose it’s what I needed given how busy work was this week.  Don’t worry, I’ll tell you all about it because it’s about time we caught up over big glasses of milk (we can spike yours!) and some freshly baked chocolate chip cookies!

If were having milk and cookies!

Given that we haven’t caught up in this way in over three months, I’d give you a huge hug and tell you how great you look.  2017 is definitely your year! I’d then proceed to tell you about the craziness that seems to be my life right now.

I’d first tell you about my team meeting last week.  From a work perspective, it was super productive.  From a fun perspective, the team definitely bonded while enjoying delicious food, conquering the EscapeHouse, cooking a meal together at The Chopping Block, and so much more.  It was a fabulous week that pooped me (and baby) out big time.  In fact, I went to bed at 8:20 pm on Wednesday night!

I’d then move on and tell you about all the fun packages/presents the baby and I have received.  Ros, my coworker from London, brought super cute onesies, a little hat/gloves, and a stuffed elephant (that I may keep for myself!) with her all the way from South Africa (she was there in December). My friend Purvi sent me a cute mommy t-shirt and Dr. Seuss book.  My friend Monica sent me a bunch of pregnancy/parenting books.  And my blogging buddy, Dixya, sent me the cutest ‘Future Mommy’ tank.  I’ve already worn it three times!

Speaking of gifts, I recently gifted myself a duffel bag from Longchamp.  I asked Ros to get it from London because it’s less than half the cost of buying in the states.  If you know anyone in Europe, this is a great little trick!  Anyways, this bag is awesome – roomy AND stylish! [Fun fact – two of my coworkers also have this same bag…see below!]

Longchamp Weekender Duffel

Changing topics slightly, I’d tell you about my shopping escapade from this past Saturday.  My coworker/good friend Thea and I headed out around noon and shopped until 5:30.  I desperately needed some maternity basics, and Thea kindly agreed to take me shopping in her neighborhood.  I found exactly what I wanted/needed (for all of you mamas-to-be, I highly recommend Destination Maternity) and then some!  This part of our conversation would remind me that I need to fill you guys in about Le Tote (a fashion rental site that also does maternity wear) – coming soon!

Moving on from shopping and spending money, we’d discuss the latest episode of This is Us next.  I’d tell you about how I ugly cried through the ENTIRE episode.  In fact, I’ve never cried this much watching an episode of television…it was heartbreakingly beautiful.  If you don’t watch this show already, you need to get on that ASAP.  Just make sure you have a box of tissues handy every week!

And finally, I’d end our conversation with some exciting news.  Vishnu and I have our 20 week (even though it will be 21.5 weeks at the time) ultrasound appointment on Friday, and this is when we’ll find out if our baby is a boy or a girl!!!  AHH!!  We’re hoping to share the fun news with our family in a fun way, so be on the lookout for that post next week!

With that, it’s time to go.  We wipe the cookie crumbs off our face and part ways.  Until next time!

Your turn – if we got together for milk and cookies, what would you tell me?

A Milk and Cookies Date [6]

written by Parita 5 Comments

It’s been a minute since our last milk and cookies date!  I can’t say I have anything super important to share.  There are a few things I want to update you on, so let’s pour ourselves some milk and grab some [chocolate chip…duh!] cookies.

If were having milk and cookies!

I’m pretty sure the election is (and will be for a very long time) on the minds of pretty much every human alive right now.  I keep turning different things over and over in my head because I still can’t grasp how this actually happened.  I thought I’d be able to watch the news again after the election was over, but no.  Now it’s all about the crazies taking over the White House.  If you’re looking for some intellectual/interesting/funny takes on what happened last week, here are a few of my personal recommendations: Hidden Brain Podcast – What Happened?, John Oliver – President-Elect Trump, and Jon Stewart on the election.

And now we can move on to happier things.  Like the fact that the weather in Chicago has been incredible.  I’ve walked home every day this week! BUT, because there’s always a but when it comes to Chicago weather, we are expecting a 30 degree dip in temperature by tomorrow.  Eeek!

With that being said, I can’t freaking wait for our trip to Hawaii!  The latest development here is that my BIL and his girlfriend are no longer joining us.  It broke my heart when he told us.  So much so that I told him to just quit his job and find a new one in the new year.  Not exactly an option I suppose!  Vishnu keeps reminding me that we have plenty of family vacations ahead of us…I guess he’s right, but still…

For the first time in a long time, I’m not going to Atlanta for Thanksgiving.  Instead, both Vishnu and I are taking Wednesday off and relaxing all day and potentially eating a Thanksgiving meal at a fine Chicago restaurant (the thought of cooking all day and doing dishes just doesn’t sound appealing right now, but we’ll see). Then on Thursday, we’re driving to St. Louis to spend a couple of days with my sister, her husband, and his family.  I’m really looking forward to it because they’re a fun bunch (and his mom makes delicious South Indian food that I can’t wait to stuff my face with!).

I feel like the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas are going to FLY.  Not only are we still pretty busy at work, but Vishnu and I also have at least five different holiday parties/celebrations to attend between the two of us.  I haven’t attended a holiday party in what feels like years.  The last one we went to ending up being kind of boring because 1. I was new to the organization and 2. no one from my team showed up.  But this year will we different, and I CAN’T WAIT!  Now to find a couple of cute holiday dresses…

I know there are a million new TV shows to pick from right now, but the one we (Parita AND Vishnu) are obsessed with right now is Parenthood.  I started watching the series on Netflix a couple of weeks ago (thanks to my sister!) and am already into season 3.  Vishnu started watching more regularly somewhere in the middle of season 2 and is totally hooked now (although I’m sure he wouldn’t put it that way!).  You guys!  This show is everything.  It’s funny, it’s emotional, it’s 100% family-oriented, it’s amazing…  Not quite sure why it took me so long to watch it, but I’m so glad I did. Everything from the characters to the story lines to the different sets…I love it all!  If you’re looking for binge-worthy show to watch this winter, Parenthood is it.  Thank me later!

Well, that’s all I have for our 6th milk and cookies date!  I promise I won’t wait so long before arranging our next one.

Happy Friday!

Your turn – What’s the weather like where you live?  What are your Thanksgiving and/or Christmas plans this year?  What show are you currently obsessed with?

A Milk and Cookies Date [5]

written by Parita 12 Comments

This milk and cookies date is very much needed, so thank you for joining me!  So much has happened since the last time we talked.  Of course, there was my sister’s wedding (!) which was absolutely amazing.  And now it’s time to M-O-V-E!  This may surprise many of you given my type-A nature, but we are totally slacking on the packing part of the moving equation.  Like big time!  But we’ll get to that in our catch-up…

So with that, let’s have some milk and cookies…

If were having milk and cookies!

I’m certain the Orlando attack is on both of our minds.  It’s all just so sad and senseless.  I don’t think I’ll ever be able to wrap my head around how someone could hurt so many innocent people.  When something horrific like this happens, my go-to emotions are anger and sadness.  And while this is no different, I’m trying my best to focus on the stories about the helpers.  Those who put their lives on the line to save as many people as possible. The helpers give me hope that no matter how bad it gets, the goodness of humanity will ALWAYS shine brighter than the hatred and intolerance of a few.

And because we’re choosing to focus on the good, we’d continue on with general life updates.

I’d tell you about Vishnu’s intern graduation this past weekend and how it was a lot of fun hanging out with everyone one last time.  It’s so bittersweet because while Vishnu’s moving on to his chosen field and taking his career forward, he’s made so many good friends in this short time.  I keep reminding him that it’s not ‘goodbye’ but rather, ‘see you soon!’

Looking back on it all, this year has been easier than I initially thought it would be.  First of all, the past 12 months feel like the came and went in a flash…seriously!  Also, I’ve seen Vishnu grow so much from an uncertain doctor to someone who really owns his profession and his knowledge. Seeing that change and evolution was a true highlight for me!

Next, you’d ask me about how the packing is going.  To that I would respond with an ‘ummm’ because it hasn’t gone very far.  Our apartment is a disaster, but we’ll get there eventually…we have to!  Over the weekend, I kept saying the word ‘pack’ and Vishnu kept saying the words ‘later’ and ‘relax.’  That brings us to today and now I’m anything but relaxed, but I’m not letting it stress me out too much.  It’ll all get done, and we’ll be in Chicago before we know it!  Woo-sah!

We’d then move on to the topic of fitness because I’m sick of talking about this damn move!  I’d tell you that I’m trying to move as much as possible.  I wouldn’t call a lot of what I do a full-blown workout, but I do what I can when I can.  Again, I’m trying not to stress about things that don’t really matter right now.  While it would be wonderful to fit in a 45 minute workout every day, I don’t always have the time or energy.  I’m really trying hard to stick to a “do the best you can every day and don’t sweat the small stuff” mantra.  So far, so good!

Food and exercise go hand in hand, so we would of course talk about that next.  I’d tell you that this is the week of eating whatever we have on hand (eggs, oatmeal, frozen food, etc.).  We did, however, have an amazing dining experience at Bern’s Steakhouse last week.  It was the perfect celebratory meal (5 year engagement anniversary, the end of intern year, and the end to FL living).  We started with soup and salad (one of the best Vishnu’s ever had!).  Then we moved on to some pretty fabulous entrees (fish for Vishnu, a perfectly composed vegetarian dish for me, and truffle mac n’ cheese to share!).  We ended our meal with music, coffee, and a peanut butter truffle dessert.  You guys…it was perfection!  I love that my husband loves food as much as I do!  It makes for some fun adventures. 🙂

I know this was somewhat of a short date!  Hopefully I’ll have more exciting updates to share next month.  Before we part ways, I’d warn you that I may disappear again for a bit until we’re a little more settled in Chicago.  But as always, I’ll try my best to keep up with some of my social feeds (Facebook, Instagram, and/or Snapchat (username – myinnershakti)).

Until next time…oh and wish us luck on the M-O-V-E!!

Tell me what you’ve been up to!

A Milk and Cookies Date [4]

written by Parita 12 Comments

I promise I will not talk about the details behind my sister’s wedding and our upcoming move in this post!  Not sure there’s much left to say at this point anyways. 🙂

I do, however, want to share some of the randomness that’s been floating around in my head since our last catch-up.  With that, let’s have some milk and cookies!

If were having milk and cookies!

If we were having a milk and cookies date today…

First and foremost, I would give you a big hug and thank you for meeting with me.  I love our monthly dates!

After some general catching up, I would tell you about how Vishnu surprised me with a weekend getaway to Marco Island!  He knows how sad I am about leaving Florida, so he figured one last beach weekend would be the perfect way to celebrate four wonderful years of living in the sunshine state. While I’ve taken a few days off this year, we have yet to go on a super relaxing vacation of any sort.  SO EXCITED!

You would then tell me about your summer plans, which include beach time and books.  This would of course prompt a discussion about our long reading lists. I would tell you about how I’m making my way through Pema Chodron’s When Things Fall Apart.  It’s one of those books where you read a chapter, give yourself a couple of days to think about the key messages, rinse and repeat.  In a nutshell, this book is about how to make it to the other side when you’re overwhelmed by pain and difficulty. I’m not going through anything major right now, but honestly, that’s the best time for me to read books like this.  It’s easier for me to absorb these kinds of messages when I’m not in the middle of a crisis.

You would then ask me how the move is coming.  Instead of boring you with the mundane details, I would tell you about how I want this move to be different than the last.  When we moved to St. Pete, I took on a lot of unnecessary stress that manifested itself as acne and arguments.  I’m not going there this time!  The physical/mental/emotional toll is not worth it.  This time around, I’m going to take my own advice and take a pause as and when I need it!

We would then move on and talk about food.  I would tell how you about how I feel guilty because my cooking has been sub-par lately.  Meal planning and everything that goes with it is on hold until we get to Chicago.  I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m still making food at home, but it’s not super creative by any means.  On the bright side, that leaves a little more room for us to enjoy all of the St. Pete/Tampa restaurants we haven’t had a chance to try yet!

You would then tell me about how my recent friendship post helped you reassess where you stand with certain “friends” and who you want to spend more of your time and energy with.  I would tell you that I’ve been consumed with a bit of guilt because over the past few months I feel like I’ve absolutely dropped the friendship ball.  I need to pick it back up because catching up with good friends brings me a lot of happiness.

It’s almost time to go, but before we say bye, I would tell you about how MIS is going to be put on the back burner for the rest of May and June. I recently realized that something has to give, and since this blog doesn’t pay the bills, I made the decision to cut back a little and focus on the other important and urgent things I have going on right now.  I will, however, still be fairly active on social media, so be sure to follow me on ALL THE OUTLETS – Facebook // Instagram // Snapchat (username -myinnershakti).  I’ll definitely be sharing all of the wedding fun and some of the moving craziness!

And with that, it’s time to go our separate ways!  Can’t wait to do it again in a month.

What’s going on in your life right now?  What are you currently reading?  Any fun summer plans in the works?

If were having milk and cookies!

A Milk and Cookies Date [3]

written by Parita 6 Comments

Another month, another milk and cookies date!

I really look forward to these catch-ups because they give me a chance to chat without aim and release all of the disconnected thoughts in my head. Thanks in advance for listening!

With that, let’s sit down and enjoy some soft ooey gooey cookies and a tall glass of [almond] milk.

milk and cookies date with a blogger

If we were having milk and cookies together today…

A big hug would be in order (duh)!  And instead of chatting about the small things first, we would just start with whatever’s on our mind and go with the flow.

I would tell you all about how Darya Rose, the author of the blog Summer Tomato, recently started a podcast called Foodist.  If you like learning about other people’s health journeys, definitely check it out.  I love Darya’s realistic, no-nonsense approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle.

We would then inevitably chat about the weather, and I would tell you how evening walks are back in my life!  While it’s too freaking hot to go outside at any other time of the day, the temperature around 6 pm is perfect (IMO).  And with the sun not setting until almost 8 pm, I have no excuses not to get out!

Social media would be on our minds for some reason, so we’d move on to a discussion about our favorite channels.  You’d tell me Pinterest is where it’s at, but I would disagree.  For me, it’s all about Instagram and Snapchat.  Yes, the thing I joined last is quickly becoming my favorite.  I love how Snapchat incorporates pictures and video and how nothing is permanent.  The casual feel is also great…share whatever you want, whenever you want. Pretty awesome!  The built in chat feature is convenient too.  So much to love.  After going on and on about Snapchat, I’d finally convince you to join and follow me (@myinnershakti) of course!  But don’t lie…the crazy selfie filter feature is what really drew you in!

Obviously food would be next on the list of things we talk about.  I would share with you that I’m still on an egg + avocado + feta + sriracha + sourdough toast kick.  SO DAMN GOOD!  And it literally takes five minutes to make.  I’d also share that my favorite afternoon snack as of late is Greek yogurt + PB.  However, if you’re anything like Vishnu, you’ll think that’s a really gross combo.  But I don’t find that to be the case, so it’s worth mentioning!

After talking about some of your recent food obsessions, I’d share a story about how I experienced the power of humor at the grocery store the other day.  My usual experience at our local Publix isn’t always a great one.  So I was pleasantly surprised when the lady behind the deli counter joked with me, a vegetarian, about buying turkey for my husband.  It seems like such a silly thing to remember, but it made the rest of my shopping experience + the rest of my night a lot lighter.  Regardless of what we do for a living, I think humor and fun are absolutely key.

Travel would come up next like it always does.  I’d tell you that I’m not travelling again until the end of the month for our Chicago house hunting trip! Eep!  The funny thing is that I’m not at all nervous about the whole process, and that’s probably because I’ve gone through it a million times now. But in all seriousness, fingers and toes are crossed that we find what we’re looking for.  I’ll share more when we meet again next month!

And finally, with a few minutes to spare, you’d ask me about my sister’s wedding and how all that is coming along.  I’d tell you that the excitement is getting real now, especially with less than two months to go!  I’m currently in charge of the RSVP list, and I can’t help but smile every time I think about seeing our family and friends in June.  But even before the wedding, we have Aekta’s med school graduation that both Vishnu and I are flying home for!  I still remember attending Vishnu’s graduation last May.  It was such an emotional day, and I know this will be the same.  Can’t wait!

With that, it’s time to go…until next month that is!

So tell me, what’s going on in your life right now?  Any big summer plans?

A Milk and Cookies Date [2]

written by Parita 14 Comments

I didn’t expect our milk and cookies date last month to be such a hit, especially given that I did most of the talking! 🙂  However, a few of you shared how you enjoyed hearing my random thoughts + life updates.  I invite you to join me once again for some fresh out of the oven chocolate chip cookies and almond milk (or whatever beverage you prefer).

If we were having milk and cookies

If we were having milk and cookies…

First things first, I’d give you a hug and say thanks for joining me again!  I really do look forward to our random little chats.

After settling in, we’d talk about upcoming travel plans.  I’d tell you that I’m flying to Chicago for a meeting next week and how I’m excited to see my coworkers…and to eat some delicious Chicago food!  I have my sister’s bachelorette party in Austin the following week, so we’d chat about that and all the fun stuff we have planned.  Aside from celebrating my sister and her upcoming wedding, I’m really looking forward to Torchy’s Tacos! Hands down the best tacos I’ve ever had!  I’d then share how most of April will be spent in St. Pete minus the house hunting trip we have planned at the very end of the month.  I’m thankful Vishnu’s schedule allows him to join me on that one!  That would bring us to May, which is all about my sister’s graduation from medical school and her wedding.  Of course, June brings with it the wedding itself and our big move to Chicago.  And that’s where my calendar stops at the moment.  The second half of the year is officially on hold until we are settled in Chicago.  Phew!

After discussing your travel/vacation plans, we’d then talk about transitions and how unexpectedly hard this one is going to be for me.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m SO excited about Chicago and being closer to my sister, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to miss Florida.  It’s pretty much been my home since November 2011!  The weather, the water, the palm trees – I’m going to miss it all!

We’d then move on to the topic of television.  I’ve been totally sucked into every single one of my favorite shows – The Bachelor, New Girl, Modern Family, Big Bang Theory, Life in Pieces, How to Get Away with Murder, Quantico, and House of Cards.  Each and every one of these shows has been on point this season.  LOVE!  You’d tell me how you’re excited about Game of Thrones, much like Vishnu, and I’d stare at you with a blank look on my face.  Ha!

The topic of exercise would come up next because summer is upon us.  Personally, I’ve been trying to focus on strength training.  In fact, I did this workout on Monday and am still sore.  Running has been a bit harder.  It’s too dark in the mornings for outdoor runs, and for some reason when I get on the treadmill, my ankle starts to hurt a little.  It’s all good though.  I’m just thankful my back doesn’t hurt anymore.

Even though I’m not a fashionista or a beauty expert, we’d talk a lot about shoes and skincare.  I’ve been eyeing these Tommy Hilfiger flats for a week or so now and just haven’t hit the purchase button yet.  They’re supposed to be super comfortable, and I think they’re cute (Vishnu disagrees!). Thoughts?

And in terms of skincare, I’d share how I’m OBSESSED with grapeseed oil as both a makeup remover and a facial moisturizer. I’ll share more soon, but I’m honestly a little shocked by how well it’s working on my skin.

You’d have to run at this point, so we’d wrap up our date by talking about chocolate.  I’d share that I made my chocolate chip banana bread last week and how it was gone in about 36 hours!  I also made this chocolate chip coconut flour banana bread over the weekend and shared some with Jayesh and Ankita.  We all agreed that it was delicious for being Paleo, but to be honest, both Vishnu and I prefer the real deal!  I’m going to make these chocolate chip oatmeal PB cookies before Sunday and promise to let you know how they turn out.  And of course, you’d share your favorite sweet treat recipes with me!

With that, we’d hug and part ways…until next month of course!

So tell me, what’s going on in your life right now?  Also, what’s your favorite type of cookie?!

If we were having milk and cookies

A Milk and Cookies Date

written by Parita 14 Comments

It’s been a while since I’ve let you guys in on recent (and random) happenings!  So I figured we should sit down and have a milk and cookies (yes, I’m five years old) date.  Time to chat!

If we were having milk and cookies

If we were having milk and cookies…

I would first tell you that I’m sorry for not having more pictures to share.  It’s been a crazy few weeks!

I’d then tell you about how I miss my parents a lot.  I may or may not have teared up when they drove off.  It was so great to see them, but time always goes by way too fast.  And believe it or not, I don’t have my next trip home planned yet.  I’ll definitely be flying up for my sister’s graduation, but that’s not until May!

Next we’d chat a bit about this sickness that’s been going around.  I’ve talked to three different people in three different states, and they’ve all been sick over the past few weeks.  And as you guys know, Vishnu was super sick most of last week and is finally feeling a bit better.  Thank goodness because he loves to cuddle and has been denied the past few nights.  He tried on Monday, and I pushed him away because I’m definitely trying NOT to get sick!

The next thing we’d talk about are taxes.  Yes, that dreaded four letter word.  For the first time since being married, we’re going to do our own taxes. We usually use my in-laws’ accountant, but because things are a little less complicated this year, it’s just me, Vishnu (albeit grudgingly), and Turbo Tax!

We’d then move on to books we’ve read recently.  I’d tell you all about Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin and how much I loved it.  It’s the kind of book you’ll want to revisit on a periodic basis.  I even have a blog post planned about all the habit loopholes I find myself using.

At this point in our conversation, I’d tell you about the Inspiralizer my brother-in-law to be bought me for my birthday!  You guys, it’s amazing.  I used it all last week and made zucchini and sweet potato noodle dishes.  I’m definitely in the honeymoon phase with this new gadget…in fact, Vishnu asked that I not make any spiralized veggie dishes this week.  I’ll blog more about it soon!  LOVE IT.

As I’m refilling your cup of milk, I’d tell you about how excited I am for my sister’s bachelorette party!  I can’t share all the details just yet, but we have lots of fun activities planned.  And don’t even get me started on all the restaurants I have lined up.  Drool worthy!

The next big topic of conversation would be our move to Chicago!  It’s creeping up on us for sure.  We just contacted our realtor to start the conversation about what we’re looking for, what neighborhood we’re interested in, what we’re willing to pay, etc.  AHHH…it’s getting real!

I’d then remember that my friend Ankita shared this video with me.  I’d pull it up on my phone, we’d tear up while watching it (just a tiny bit), and then we’d talk about our biggest regrets.  Powerful stuff!

Vacations would inevitably come up next.  Unfortunately, we don’t have any big ones planned right now!  But we do have a couple of local trips we want to take this month/early next month.  Naples and Marco Island, here we hopefully come!  If I were being honest, I’d tell you that at this point, I’d take a staycation where all I had to do was wake up, eat good food, read, and sleep.

And finally, before we both had to go, we’d talk movies – what we’ve recently watched, what we want to watch, etc.  I’d admit that after watching more than an acceptable number of Deadpool trailers (thanks, hubs!), I kind of want to take my butt to the theater and watch it!  Anyone else?!

And with that, we’d wrap up with a big hug and the promise that our next catch up will be sooner rather than later!
