Three Things Thursday (33) – London Baby!

written by Parita 13 Comments

I’m flying to London on Saturday!  This is a work trip, and as always, I’m super excited to see my coworkers and experience some new things while I’m there.

On the work front, end of the year trips are my favorite because they’re all about reflecting on the past 12 months and planning for what’s to come.

On a personal note, we have a few fun activities and lunches/dinners planned.  Woo hoo!

In today’s Three Things Thursday post I’m going to share a few (3 to be exact!) of the things I’m looking forward to about next week (so hard to choose).

London Baby!

Pret a Manger’s porridge and mixed berry compote

If you’ve read any of my previous London recaps, you know that Pret’s porridge is my FAVORITE!  I think half of London knows how much I love this stuff because I won’t shut up about it.

If you love oatmeal, you’ll go crazy for it. It’s so perfectly creamy and nutty.  And the compote is both sweet and tart.  I could go on and on!

You better believe that I’m getting my fill in the six days I’m there.  And I can’t promise that this is the last you’ll hear about my beloved porridge!

A night of theater

One of our evening activities is seeing the musical Kinky Boots at the Adelphi Theatre.  I wouldn’t say I’m a musical junkie, but when I go, I end up falling in love with the production (Wicked, Book of Mormon, and Aladdin).

I haven’t heard much about Kinky Boots, and to be honest, my only recollection of it is the poster at the Tube station near our office.  But I’m hoping that it too becomes one of my favs!

Dishoom

To be fair, I’m excited about all the food I’m going to eat next week.  BUT, Dishoom is the one restaurant I’m really looking forward to trying.  My friend Roshni ate there when she took a family trip to London earlier this year and raved about the experience.  She said the food is unforgettable!

I’ll be sure to try as much as I can and report back…you know, for the blog’s sake!

Well, that’s all I have today.  Happy Thursday!

How to Work From Home and Not Go Crazy 10 Simple Tips

How to Work From Home and Not Go Crazy – 10 Simple Tips

written by Parita 15 Comments

I’ve been working from home full-time since June of this year.  And at first, I was really excited.  In my head, that meant not having to dress up every day, not having to wear makeup, squeezing in a lunchtime workout every now and then, sleeping in a little bit later, not having a commute (!!!), etc.  While it’s still amazing that I was able to keep my job with this one year move, the novelty wore off quickly.

Truth be told, I’m not one of those people who can permanently work from home.  I need an office to go to every now and then.  I want to see and interact with other people.  I want to take coffee breaks with my colleagues.

I’m no dummy though.  I realize how lucky I am to be able to keep my job, work from home for a year, and transition to the Chicago office next year.  BLESSING!

I’ve also come to realize that I haven’t done my part in this whole working from home transition.  I just expected it to be perfect, and as we all know, that’s not how the world works.  You have to put in the effort to get the results you want.

And in this case, it’s fairly doable.  Working from home (at least temporarily) can be pretty great if you take some simple steps to set yourself up for success.

Here are a few tips I’ve picked up over the past few months.

How to work from home and not go crazy

1. Try your best to wake up and go to sleep at the same time every day.
Even though I’m one of the most structured people I know, I haven’t been the best at this.  And when Vishnu’s schedule isn’t “normal,” I absolutely suck.  But I’ve come to realize that it’s probably one of the, if not the, most important and helpful things you can do when working from home.  Personally, when I have set schedule, I feel more productive.  So create a schedule for yourself and stick to it!

2. Have a morning routine.
I look forward to my morning routine because it’s my one constant.  Again, depending on Vishnu’s schedule, this can look different from month to month.  But for the most part, I wake up, make Vishnu breakfast, work out, shower, eat breakfast, write in my gratitude journal, and start work.  This not only helps with productivity, but it ensures that your day starts off with a few great accomplishments.  And who doesn’t love that!

3. Dress for the day.
Up until a couple of weeks ago, I wore my PJs/workout clothes ALL DAY EVERY DAY.  I didn’t realize what a negative impact this was having on me until I took the initiative to dress for the day and wear “normal” clothes (i.e. jeans/leggings and a casual top).  I feel better about myself, I’m happier, etc.  Dressing for the day makes me feel like the professional that I am.

4. Ensure that your home office is “you.”
I don’t have a home office.  I have a corner of our bedroom.  BUT, I’ve done everything in my power to make my corner my own.  I have little trinkets and picture frames on my desk, I have my file folders all set up, I have two screens (thanks to Vishnu).  Having my own space keeps me organized.  And it brings an element of fun to the day.  I may not have an office to go to, but I do have a pretty great corner!

5. Find a non-home office place to work from.
I’m going to be 100% honest here – I have yet to do this.  But I totally see the value and benefit in working from a cute little coffee shop for a few hours a week.  It changes things up and gives you something to look forward to.

6. Schedule regular catch-up calls with coworkers and/or friends.
Working from home can bring on feelings of loneliness.  My weekly catch-up calls keep me sane and help me feel connected.  A must do if you’re working from home 100% of the time.

7. Get up every 30 minutes and walk around your house/apartment.
We all know sitting for extended periods of time is physically unhealthy.  Well, after working from home for a few months, I’ve come to realize it’s mentally unhealthy as well.  When I sit at my computer for hours at a time, I literally (ok, not literally but you know!) feel my brain turning to mush.  But when I get up and walk around, I feel energized and focused.  This is a simple tip that goes a long way.  And if you’re looking for a great little tool to keep track of time, I recommend this one.

8. Enjoy your lunch break.
This one is easy for me because my stomach’s rumbling by lunchtime.  But I know how easy it it is to make lunch and eat it in front of the computer while doing work.  Don’t!  Take a true break for 30 minutes to an hour and enjoy it.  It’s your right!  My lunchtime routine includes making lunch and watching Chopped on Food Network.

9. Get some fresh air every now and then.
I’m not proud to admit it, but there are times when I don’t go outside for days.  Sure, I’ll go to the apartment gym or go check the mail, but that doesn’t count.  I’ve come to realize how important it is to go OUTSIDE, walk around a little, and breathe in fresh air.  This is another one of those things that keeps you sane and helps you feel connected.

10. Unless there’s a work emergency that needs to be taken care of, when you shutdown at the end of the day, keep it that way!
When I worked from our Miami office, I found that it was easier for me to shutdown at 5:30, go home, and not think about work until the next day (with a few exceptions).  But now, it’s a bit harder.  I find myself checking my email after dinner and responding to things that can clearly wait.  It’s not a good habit because it feels like you’re never really turned off.  Working from home does not equal working all the time.  It’s easy to blur the lines, but again, in order to stay sane and not feel overworked, you have to shutdown and keep it that way.

What’s your day job?  Do you work from home?  If so, any tips?

A Full Few Days in Chicago

written by Parita 4 Comments

I’m so grateful that I got to spend a few days in Chicago this week.  I caught up with friends, hung out with my sister a ton, saw, spent time with coworkers I only see a few times a year, made major progress on one of my projects, and ate some delicious food.  AND the weather was absolutely perfect!  What a week!

Chicago skyline

When I got in on Tuesday, I went straight to my hotel to get ready for dinner.  A couple of my friends (Ankita and Rena), Aekta, and I had reservations at Gilt Bar, an unassuming restaurant with delicious food and drinks!  I took zero pics of the food itself because the lighting was horrible, but trust me when I say it was delicious.  My favorites of the night included the roasted garlic, the ricotta gnocci (so soft and creamy), and the brownies + ice cream + fudge.  I will be back!

Chicago friends

Aek stayed with me all week, so after dinner, we headed back to the hotel and passed out.  I was exhausted!

The next morning I headed to my company’s brand new building!  The space is absolutely gorgeous – open concept, airy, filled with sunshine, etc.  Really looking forward to calling it home next year!

Chicago neighborhood wall

After a three hour workshop, a few of us headed downstairs to pick up lunch from Freshii.  Love that there are so many healthy options nearby.

Later in the evening, my immediate team met up for a family dinner (we all brought one or more family members with us!) at Flat Top Grill.  I was so excited to introduce Aek to my team.  It was so fun catching up outside of the office!

Flat Top Grill

Immediately after dinner, Aek and I zipped over to the Loft on Michigan Avenue for a little late night shopping.  There was a 50% off the entire store sale going on, and we wanted to check it out.  Let’s just say we both walked out with a few items!

We woke up a early on Thursday to work out.  I needed a little treadmill time to offset all the food I was consuming!

After getting ready for the day, I headed out and met a friend (who is someone I now consider my friend!) of my coworker/friend Thea for breakfast and GREAT conversation.  Bekki and I sat and talked for over an hour about all things HR and blogging!  Such a great and refreshing way to start the day.

The work day was actually super packed.  One of the projects I’ve been leading over the past few months is in the final stages.  My entire day was consumed by this one project, but I didn’t mind because I was able to make some major progress.  I did, however, break for lunch.  My coworker/friend Erin and I headed to Cosi where I had the best salad!

I wanted to show my sister the new office, so she came by at the end of the day.  The best part of that was introducing her to some of my other coworkers and seeing their reactions.  One person in particular was absolutely blown away by how similar we look and act!

After touring the office, we headed to the hotel to drop off our stuff.  Next stop…Pequods for some deep dish pizza!  This particular dining experience was interesting for a few different reasons, but the (now) funniest one involved my slice of pizza and the container of red pepper flakes.  Let’s just say the top wasn’t screwed on super tightly which resulted in red pepper chaos.  I mean, everything was covered – me, the table, and my slice!  Out waitress was awesome and offered to give us a personal pan pizza for free (which we didn’t end up eating).  Instead, we swung by the hospital afterwards to see Adarsh and deliver some delicious pizza.  It all worked out!

Pequods pizza

My sister and I watched the latest episode of The Mindy Project before bed and called it a night.  I was overcome with exhaustion!

And now I’m home and ready for the weekend (and to see my hubby)!  Our friends Jenny and Jimi will be here tonight, and we can’t wait to spend time with them!

Chicago, you were great (as always)!  I can’t wait to see you again in a few weeks!  Try not to get all cold on me please!

Have a great weekend!

Chicago – Food and Fun

written by Parita 10 Comments

I’ve been looking forward to recapping my trip all week.  And now that it’s time to do just that, I’m not feeling very wordy!  Funny how that works.  I’ll try my best!

One note before I share more – my photos kind of suck because I wasn’t focused on taking great pictures, just creating great memories!  And I apologize if you’ve already seen these pictures via my Instagram.

FOOD

RPM

RPM - Chicago

This was my third time dining at RPM (first time and second time), and it just keeps getting better.  Looking back, we probably ordered a little too much food, but it was all so delicious!  You really can’t go wrong here.  Everything is just so fresh and well made, which makes the higher price point totally worth it in my opinion.  This is a MUST visit Chicago restaurant!

Native Foods Café

Native Foods Cafe - Chicago

My coworker Thea and I ate at Native Foods Café a few times when I was in Chicago last September.  It’s super close to our office, and the food is so tasty!  This time around we shared the nachos and an order of sweet potato fries.  A few of our other coworkers joined us for lunch and absolutely loved the food as well.  It packs quite the punch for a vegan restaurant!

Roti

Roti - Chicago

On Wednesday our team hosted a lunch for some of the other teams in our organization, and we catered the meal from a place called Roti.  Everything is very flavorful, especially the hummus.  So creamy and rich…LOVE!

Osteria Via Stato

Osteria via Stato - Chicago

On Wednesday night we had our big team dinner at Osteria Via Stato, a local Italian restaurant.  Because of the size of our group, we had prix fixe menu, and even then, all of the food I tried was delicious – salted ciabatta bread with roasted garlic marinated in balsamic vinegar (MY FAVORITE!), crispy polenta, spring pasta with veggies, farro risotto (second favorite!), and the list goes on.  I can’t wait to bring Vishnu back here because I know he’d love it!

Little Goat Diner

Little Goat Diner - Chicago

On Thursday evening I took a break from team stuff and made dinner plans with my friends Ankita and Rena.  We went to Little Goat Diner in the West Loop neighborhood of Chicago.  The food was fantastic!  Some of the items we ordered were comfort food “ish”, while others were innovative and unique.  But everything was really fresh and bold.  I will be back Little Goat!

FUN

Cubs game

Cubs game

My London coworkers wanted to experience American baseball, so a bunch of us went to a Cubs (vs. Brewers) game on Tuesday evening.  It was so fun seeing them get excited with the rest of the crowd, and surprisingly, they got the gist of the game fairly quickly.  I had to explain a few things like stealing and bases loaded, but overall, everyone really enjoyed themselves!

Fireworks

Fireworks - Chicago

Every Wednesday and Saturday night during the summer, the city of Chicago does fireworks by Navy Pier.  Because of my coworker Toni’s husband, we got to watch them from the rooftop of one of the buildings on the lakefront.  Amazing!

Well, that’s all I have in terms of a recap.  I did go down a slightly wordy path…oops!  That was bound to happen though, especially considering how packed and full this week was!

I head home today and can’t wait to see Vishnu!!  AND we have some very special guests visiting this weekend…my parents!  Yay!

Cheers to the freakin’ weekend!

Pret A Manger porridge in London with berry jam

London – Work, Eat, Play

written by Parita 9 Comments

Work

Nothing too interesting to report here. Lots of meetings, planning, and strategizing for the rest of 2015/early 2016. It’s going to be a busy few months!

Even though I enjoy my job, I must say, having cool coworkers makes it that much better. They all share my love for good food and adventure. There are always amazing restaurants and fun things to do on the agenda when we get together (re: Play below).

Eat

I’ve been eating Pret A Manger’s porridge for breakfast every day. You guys, it’s so so so good! I’ve blogged about it before, but for those who missed it, this stuff is creamy, hearty, and delicious. And the berry compote takes it to the next level. Tart, slightly sweet, and mmm mmm good! The combination is out of this world!

Dear Pret, never ever stop selling porridge!

Pret A Manger - Porridge
Remember when my boss and I were in NYC for a conference and we ate at Kati Roll three times in one week? Well, guess what…there’s a Kati Roll in London, and we went for lunch on Monday. Luckily, it was just as good as we remembered it!

Kati Roll - London
While the two restaurants listed above are not new to me, we did check out an entirely new place called Inspiral.  The menu is really unique in terms of it’s offerings.  As in, it’s vegan/vegetarian/raw.

We tried the raw nachos made with flax and cashews, a veggie burger that came with the most delicious vegan mayo, and the raw lasagna with zucchini noodles as the base.  And of course, you can’t leave without trying some rich chocolate/avocado/coconut butter fudge cake (that went unpictured).  So unexpectedly yum!

Inspiral - London
Play

Last time I came to London for similar meetings, my coworkers planned a lot in terms of sightseeing.  This time around, because I’ve seen most everything, we decided to lay low and do something different.  So we went to Regent’s Park and had a picnic!

Picnic - Regents Park - London
Delicious food, great weather, and my goofy colleagues – the perfect combo for a fun evening in the park!

Regents Park - London
Lots of other people had the same idea!

I’m sad my trip is coming to an end, but I can’t wait to see my Vishnu!  It was our 3rd wedding anniversary yesterday, and it’s our 10th dating anniversary on Saturday!  So much to celebrate. 🙂

Thanks for reading!

10 Pieces of Career Advice

written by Parita 9 Comments

I was recently reflecting on the fact that my college graduation was nine years ago, and that my business school graduation was five years ago.  Umm, what?!  I hate to be all cliché, but time really did fly.  Although it didn’t always feel that way.

With it being graduation season and all, I thought it would be fun to post my top 10 pieces of career advice.  Words that (hopefully) resonate with new grads as well as seasoned professionals.

Career adviceSo here’s my story and my advice!

Upon graduating from college, I joined a global accounting organization.  A few weeks into the job, I told a friend that I was going to make partner one day.  In that moment in time, I truly meant it.  Fast-forward to about six months later and I wanted out.  For so many reasons, the career that once made me think big and reach for the stars now felt like a heavy brick sitting flat on my chest weighing me down.

I eventually did leave that job.  In fact, I went to business school, earned my MBA, and changed career paths altogether.  And I’m not going to lie.  Every now and then I still feel like I have a brick on my chest.  Even after making a personal and very conscience decision to turn my life upside down for a while.

That’s where the following 10 pieces of career advice come into play.  These are the things I wish someone had told me nine years ago (especially #1 and #2) and the things I still tell myself to this day:

1. Don’t freak out when your first job isn’t a love-at-first-sight kind of experience.  It’s 100% okay not to love your first job out of school.  Heck, it’s okay not to love your second, third, and fourth jobs as well.  It took me a while, but I’ve learned that it’s not about the perfect job.  It’s about adding value, being creative, and making a difference.

2. Don’t be afraid to change career paths.  I majored in Finance, worked for an accounting firm, earned my MBA, worked in traditional HR, and now focus on international strategic HR.  And guess what?  I’ve never been told that my semi-frequent career shifts are a red flag.  If anything, each change has enabled me to focus on assignments I truly enjoy.

3. Find a mentor(s) you can confide in and trust and really nurture and value the relationship.  That one investment will reap considerable returns in the future.

4. Be open to constructive feedback.  When you show up every day, work hard, and put your best foot forward, (most of) the people you work with will have your back.  So, when someone offers you an opportunity for improvement, don’t take it personally.  First and foremost, listen to what the person has to say.  Once you’ve understood and assessed where the feedback and the person are coming from, think about how you can use the information, do just that, and move on.

5. Do the stuff no one else wants to do.  For example, raise your hand for the tough assignments.  Even if it seems impossible, trust yourself, take a deep breath, and get to work.  You’ll figure it out!

6. Take every opportunity to improve your public speaking and presentation skills!  I know standing up and speaking in a room full of people is scary and daunting.  But if you can face your fears and tackle this, you’ll be light years ahead of most people in your field.  I guarantee it!

7. Speak up!  From having an idea you want to share with your team to believing you deserve a promotion, absolutely nothing will happen unless you speak up.  Easier said than done, I know.  But it’s your career.  Own it.

8. Network, network, network!  Connecting with like-minded people is always a good thing, but keep in mind that it’s not a one-way street.  Remember to do your part by following up, keeping promises, and carrying business cards with you at all times!

9. Try your best to stay away from the proverbial water cooler.  Office gossip will try to lure you into it’s seemingly innocent web.  Don’t fall for it.  Be friendly and stay focused.

Plus a bonus tip my mom shares with me quite regularly.

10. Don’t just glance over your HR policies.  Pay attention to things like 401ks and HSAs.  And setup an automatic withdrawal that goes from your paycheck directly into your bank account.  This one was hard for me at first, but you won’t miss that money especially when you see it growing and taking on a life of its own.

Nine years and three companies later, I’ve come to realize that the only person who can chip away at the brick(s) that weighs me down is me.  It’s my career and my responsibility.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve received?

A Week in the Life – My Day job

written by Parita 13 Comments

I don’t talk about my day job on the blog much.  I think I’ve mentioned that I work in Human Resources, and that’s about it.  Well, it’s about time I share a little more, especially since it’s such an important part of my life.

I work for a global accounting organization, and in a nutshell, I’m a Global Project Manager on the People and Culture (P&C) team.  We develop initiatives, projects, programs, etc. to help our member firms around the world attract, retain, develop, and empower their people.  Obviously there’s a lot more to it, but that’s my high level elevator speech.

As I mentioned in one of my blog posts, our team spent this past week in Miami together discussing and planning for 2015.  It was actually one of our best meetings to date.  We stuck to our agenda, covered all the right things, and bonded as a team.

Since my daily work life is pretty much the same in terms of structure, I thought I would share some of the highlights from our team meeting.  Truthfully, it’s just more fun to talk about!

MONDAY:

The 19 person team meeting didn’t start until Tuesday, so we used Monday to regroup as a mini team (there are four of us on our mini team).  We reflected on 2014, discussed 2015 projects and strategy, and prepared for the larger team meeting.

Before we met for the day, my boss and I walked over to Whole Foods to grab some breakfast and chat.  She’s based in London, so it was nice to connect in person!

Whole Foods Coffee
After working away for a few hours, we broke for lunch.  Mexican food, specifically guac, resonated with everyone, so we headed to Rosa Mexicano.  So so good!

Rosa Mexicano 1
Rosa Mexicano 2
And then we worked some more…the view helped with the post-lunch slump!

Meeting view
Later that evening, the larger team got together for a welcome reception at OTC.  Great food, great coworkers, great convo!

OTC 2
TUESDAY:

After eating breakfast at home, I walked over to the hotel where the larger team meeting was being held.  Love it when our meetings are in Miami because I can walk everywhere!

We spent the entire day talking about our global strategy and the role of our team.  Exciting stuff!

team meeting tuesday 2
Dinner on Tuesday was at The Rusty Pelican, a Miami dining institution!  While the food was delicious, I really loved the view!

The Rusty Pelican
WEDNESDAY:

Wednesday was more of the same in terms of our meeting – lots of sharing and lots of discussion.

On Wednesday night, we had dinner at Perricone’s.  If you can’t tell, our team loves good food.  Sometimes we plan our dinners before we plan the actual meeting agenda!

Perricones
THURSDAY:

We met as a mini team on Thursday and discussed the outputs from the larger team meeting and a few of our projects in more detail.

team meeting thursday
And again, the views make our already fun meetings that much better!

Thursday night was a free night, so Thea (my friend and teammate) and I had dinner at Momi Gyoza.  We both ordered the pan fried vegetable dumplings…yum!

FRIDAY:

Friday consisted of a little more team discussion, a couple of phone calls, emails, lunch at Balans, shopping, and sushi!

Nikko by Sunshine
By the end of Friday night, I was EXHAUSTED!  I was likely asleep before my head even hit the pillow!

SATURDAY:

Even though all team related things were officially over by Saturday, I have to mention the fact that all I did was clean, nap, and watch a movie.  It was perfect!

I even made myself some breakfast for lunch!

breakfast for lunch
And that, my friends, is how the Global People and Culture team does it!  We work hard, play hard, and eat well!

What does your day job consist of?  Do you love what you do?
