A Little Glimpse

written by Parita 21 Comments

As y’all know, I don’t blog about every single detail of every single minute of every single day.  And really, that’s for no reason other than the fact that my life is not that interesting.  I’d rather pick one particular thing that’s on my mind and elaborate on it.

I do, however, share more of my every day life on Instagram, a photo sharing social media program.  If you’re not already signed up, do it now – so fun.  And if you’re already an Instagrammer, follow me!!  I also regularly share random pictures and videos with my family.  Some of these never make it to the blog.  Shocking!

With all that being said, I thought it would be fun to show a glimpse of what happens around these parts on a regular basis.  Note: Instagram helps make ordinary things look interesting!

This picture is an old one.  It’s from when Vishnu was doing his fantasy football stuff.  One of his leagues (I think that’s what you call it) video conferenced him in, and when I walked in to say hi to the guys, I was told to leave!  How rude!

Our new chair!  As I was going through my pictures, I realized I never shared this one on the blog.  But yeah, I love this big, comfortable chair…worth every penny!

I called dibs on the chair, so that left Vishnu with the ottoman.  Kind of like poor Michael Scott on The Office.  Ha!  Jusssst kidding!

If you’re on Instagram, you’ve probably seen a bajillion pictures like this one.  Something I learned very quickly is that people love sunsets and clouds.  I took this one during my flight from Detroit to Fort Lauderdale.  And yes, I am one of those people.

This quote, along with a bunch of others, is posted in my cube.  Inspiration at it’s finest!

This one y’all will love!  That shoe rack is actually a bookshelf that we bought at Ikea.  Between the two of us, we have A LOT of shoes, so this is a cool way to keep them organized.

Speaking of shoes, my boss gave me two pairs of almost brand new Christian Louboutin shoes.  Just because she can’t wear them anymore.  No words.

My cousin sent me this picture the the other day.  Some things never change – like my face!

Narrow parking spaces annoy the crap out of me.  On this particular day, I had to climb in through the passenger side, and I think I banged my knee in the process.  This was something I couldn’t just laugh off.  Probably because it happens at least twice a week.  Grrr!

My new favorite workout DVD!  I’ve only done Levels 1 and 2 (out of 4) and let me tell you – they are killer!  I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an effective, quick, at home workout that can be done in your living room.

My reminder to drink more water!  And for those of you who are wondering if a simple note works, I am here to tell you that it does.  I drink a minimum of 50 ounces of water between 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.

I’ve been meaning to post this soup recipe on the blog but just haven’t gotten around to it.  I made it on a day where the temperature was a little lower than we were used to (i.e., Florida has turned us into a couple of wusses).

Kale chips!  This was my first time attempting to make these, and I couldn’t believe how great they tasted.  Vishnu and I ate them all (two bunches worth) in one sitting.  Vitamin overload!

I got a pedicure this past weekend.  It was MUCH needed.  The minute I sat down to soak my feet, I looked at the lady and apologized for the grossness.  She laughed and assured me it was fine, but I know what she was thinking!

For the first time in years, I gave myself a manicure.  The whole experience made me realize what I was missing out on – a relaxing activity that helps save money!  Win win!  When I sent my mom a picture of the finished product, she laughed and said the color looked like S***!  Hahahahahaha.  She’s a fan of reds and maroons, while I prefer neutral colors on my hands.  I don’t care what you think, momma, I’m giving you a manicure and painting your nails THIS color!!

And finally, MY nightcap!  Vishnu found this to be too dark for his taste, so it’s all mine!

Mind Dump

written by Parita 13 Comments

1.  It’s Friday.  Enough said.

2.  Certain parts of this week’s Modern Family actually freaked me out a little.  A comedy scared me.  Only me!

3.  I’m going home for a week in November!  And yes, I said “I” and not “we.”  Vishnu will not be coming. Sad smile  His school scheduled comprehensive finals starting the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.  SO DUMB!

4.  Everyone needs to follow Thought Catalog and Uber Facts on Twitter.  Just know this though – your overall productivity will be impacted.  Consider yourself warned.

5.  This is so me.

6.  Vishnu introduced me to Coursera the other night, and because I’m a nerd, I signed up for two classes – Fundamentals of Human Nutrition and Introduction to Philosophy.  By the way, these classes are FREE!  However, there is real coursework involved – readings, papers, etc.  I plan on doing the work, but it’s nice to know that there is no real punishment for missing an assignment.  Anyway, I’ll let y’all know how it goes as these particular classes aren’t slated to start until early 2013.  The only downside is that sometimes courses are cancelled based on the professor’s schedule.  Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen.

7.  Next Tuesday Vishnu and I are going here for dinner.  Woot woot!

8.  I am working from home today because the weather is ridiculous.  I don’t feel like dealing with wind, rain, and crazy drivers.  No thank you!  For anyone that lives on the eastern seaboard…be safe!  Hurricane Sandy looks like one tough cookie.

9.  My favorite someecard…

10.  Enjoy the weekend!

Aishwariya Rai’s Weight Gain “Controversy”

written by Parita 14 Comments

aishwarya_rai_02Even if you’re not a Bollywood fanatic, chances are you’ve heard of Aishwariya Rai. She’s a former Miss World title holder, she’s been cited as “the most beautiful woman in the world,” and she’s appeared in a number of Bollywood blockbusters.  Aishwariya gained even more celebrity when she married into the Bachchan family.  Her father in-law, Amitabh Bachchan, is probably the most famous Bollywood actor…ever.

Her newest role is being a mother to a six month old baby girl.  And here’s where the controversy (or so called controversy) comes into play.  The Indian media has been passing a lot of judgment her way because – gasp – she’s in no rush to lose the baby weight!   Many claim she’s letting herself go, and that this is just not acceptable.  She’s an idol in the eyes of young girls, and she needs to set the right example.  Umm, what!?

Based on some of the comments that have been made, you would think she committed treason or something.  People don’t understand how she’s not in top shape after six months of giving birth.  Supposedly, she owes it to the people of the world to lose all of her pregnancy weight in record time.

Honestly, I was surprised to read that she didn’t hire a personal trainer right away.  It seems that celebrity moms (from all parts of the world) are in a rush to lose the baby weight plus some and are able to do so easily.  It’s hard to believe that someone with the means to do so chooses to take her time with the process.

After thinking about this for a few days, I’m actually happy that she’s doing what makes her and her body happy, as she’s the only one who knows what it needs.  If it doesn’t bother her, why is it making so many people angry?

Maybe it’s because of cultural norms, maybe it’s because she chooses not to do something even though she can, or maybe it’s because people aren’t ready to accept that Ms. Rai has gained some weight.  In any case, I think these people are sick.

aishwarya-rai-weight-gain-pics

The sad part is that all women, celebrity or not, go through this.  Personally, I’ve seen close friends and family members work their asses off to lose pregnancy weight because that is now the norm.  One could even call it a competition.  The women I know literally felt pressured to shrink back to their previous sizes as quickly as possible.  I’ve never been pregnant, so I honestly don’t know what it’s like to try to lose that kind of weight, but I imagine it’s hard…really really hard.

It’s just sad to me that on top of all the internal pressure new mothers face, people pass judgment when the weight doesn’t come off that easily, new mothers feel like ugly whales when the scale doesn’t budge, and society still defines beauty by what’s on the outside.  Sad smile

Something I try to remind myself on a daily basis (because sometimes I fall prey to thinking thin) is that…

“Beauty is not in the face (or the body); beauty is a light in the heart.” – Khalil Gibran

Thoughts on the Aishwariya “controversy?”  Do you think the [global] cultural norm is for woman to be as thin as possible?
