It’s OK!

written by Parita 6 Comments

IT’S FRIDAY!!!  I feel like I say this every week, but it’s ok because the end of the week is awesome.  I hope I never meet someone who doesn’t get excited about weekends.  Never.

I don’t know what it is, but I feel a little more out of it than usual.  My thoughts are all over the place, I can’t concentrate…oh December, what are you doing to me?!

But it’s ok to be random and loopy every now and then.  Why?  Because I say so!

It’s also ok to…

  • Listen to all the dooms day stories and roll your eyes all while thinking “what if…”
  • Eat chocolate with every meal of the day, especially on one of THOSE days
  • Nod off while brushing your teeth
  • Be excited about holiday travel – only because you’ll be spending time with some awesome people!
  • Still have some Christmas shopping left to do
  • Put off your to do list for a day or two or three
  • Be excited about your company’s holiday party only because you get to wear a pretty dress (and see your husband all dressed up)
  • Scream at the top of your lungs while driving because the person in front of you is so F****** slow!!!!!
  • Wish you were Penny on The Big Bang Theory…how much fun would that be!?
  • Eat lunch at 10:45 am…that’s why you bring “afternoon” snacks
  • Not keep a careful eye on a boiling pot of water and have it spill over onto your stove
  • Get excited about the new skee ball game you downloaded on your phone
  • Tear up (cry, whatever) while watching complete strangers get engaged (click here if interested)

Well, that’s all I got.  Like I said, my thoughts have been super random lately but…it’s ok!

Have a great weekend!

Complete this sentence: It’s ok to ________!!

Back to the Grind

written by Parita 11 Comments

First and foremost, I hope y’all had an amazing Thanksgiving holiday full of all the things and people you love!  It’s hard to believe that 2013 is right around the corner.  Where does the time go?

Well, I’m back in Florida and back to the grind.  For some reason, the transition back has been harder than usual.  I miss my family a lot!  Good thing I’ll be seeing them again for Christmas when Vishnu and I head back to Georgia.  Very much looking forward to that.

I figure most of you are having a hard time getting back into the swing of things as well, so I thought I would share some random/inspirational/funny/silly things to make your day a little brighter!

A little more serious to start off with (LOVE this quote)…

To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.
Arundhati Roy

Moving onto some funny things I found…

Funny Friendship Ecard: I appreciate your friendship so much that if we ever got into a fist fight I'd totally try my best to avoid your face.

Funny Birthday Ecard: May you live to be so old that your driving terrifies people.

And finally, a funny story from Saturday night…

After Vishnu picked me up from the airport, we headed to Lime Fresh for dinner.  I ordered my usual vegetarian taco salad and picked out what I thought were the three salsas I usually get.  Before digging into my salad, I poured on all three salsas.  With the first bite I was reaching for water and telling Vishnu that they put something spicy in my salad.  After a few more bites I declared that I couldn’t eat anymore.  Vishnu took one look at the empty salsa containers and asked if I was sure I didn’t take the habanero salsa by accident.  Umm…that’s EXACTLY what I did.  In my defense, it looked just like the salsa verde!  When one of the servers came by and asked if everything was ok, I explained my stupid mistake.  To my surprise, she brought me another salad.  Talk about excellent customer service.  It wasn’t even the restaurant’s fault!  Well, I learned my lesson the hard way (my stomach was on fire the rest of the night).  Never again will I even go near the habanero salsa!

Hope one of these made you smile!  Have a great Monday. Smile

Spirited Living

Every morning when I wake up, I look in the mirror and say, “Today is going to be a good day.”  I really do.  And you know what, since I’ve been doing this, my days have been pretty good for the most part.  Now, I’m not one of those people who believes in the “secret” and the whole concept of saying what you want and then getting it.  I believe in knowing what you want and living with intention.

So if what I want is for my day to be good, I know that I have to base my intentions around that.  For me, a HUGE part of this is living with spirit.  In a way, we each have our own spirit that we bring to the table.  Personally, I think I show spirit in the way of my quirkiness.  Don’t laugh, but I believe that by showing people my authentic self (a very quirky one at that), I enable them to do so as well.  This in turn creates positive energy that feeds the universe.  With each passing day, I’m more and more convinced that this is 100% true.

My spirited quirky self is ever present in all facets of my life.

It showed up before my wedding with my grandmother.  She’s never in her life worn a dress.  Until I insisted…

It was present during a family reunion where I sported a high side ponytail and danced around like it was 1988…

It entertained my family as I pretended to win Miss America while holding my sister’s graduation flowers…

And it almost always comes out when I’m with my Vishnu.  In fact, I think my quirky spirit has rubbed off on him.  I have a video that serves as the perfect example of this, but I’ve been told not to post it.  “Some things are not meant for the blog.”  Boo!

Spirited “quirky” living is amazing.  It’s helping me and those around me laugh and smile more.  And that to me goes beyond having a good day, it leads to a good life.

Laughing at Myself

written by Parita 14 Comments

It’s weird how things work out sometimes.  Like how I write about finding the humor in not so humorous situations and learning to laugh at myself along the way, and then find myself doing that the very next day.

So here’s what happened…

My boss is out of the country right now, which means that I have the option to work from home if I so choose.  Working from home is great once maybe twice a week, but after that, I find it gets a little lonely and boring.  I need people around me during the day.  So this morning I decided that I would go into work.

I work up nice and early, washed and straightened my hair (which is a rarity right now because of the humidity), did my makeup, got dressed, made breakfast to go, kissed Vishnu goodbye, and walked out the door.

My morning commute varies by the day, but on this particular morning, it took about 50 minutes.  I parked my car in the garage, started walking towards the elevators, realized I didn’t have my laptop and walked back to my car.  As I neared my car, I knew that I wasn’t going to find my computer on the back seat as usual but I looked anyway.  My instinct was right.  My laptop wasn’t there because IT WAS AT HOME ON THE KITCHEN TABLE WHERE I FORGOT IT!

So I got back into my car and drove home.

And at first, I was very very annoyed with myself (Parita you’re wasting time, Parita you’re wasting gas, etc.).  Instead of going too deep down that path, I chose a different one.  I laughed.  I promise – I just shook my head and laughed.  I called my mom to tell her what happened and we laughed.  I called Vishnu to tell him what happened and we laughed.  After a 40 minute drive back home, I walked into our apartment, saw my laptop sitting on the kitchen table, and started laughing.

Whoever said laughter is the best medicine was an absolute genius.  Had I not chose to laugh at myself, my day probably would’ve unfolded quite differently.  I can just imagine the alternative scenario in my head – tears, an argument with Vishnu for no good reason, sulking, etc.  All things that would’ve robbed me of an otherwise great day.  I really do believe that because I chose to laugh at myself and move on my day took a turn for the better – I got a good amount of work done from home, I ended up going to yoga, and Vishnu and I had ourselves a little pizza party while watching The Big Bang Theory.

I actually learned a lot through this experience.  One, always check to make sure the laptop leaves the apartment with me!  Duh!  And two, even if it doesn’t and I end up driving 90 minutes for no good reason, it’s not the end of world.  What can you do?  Laugh, move on, and have a great day!

Happy Friday!

Way of the Peaceful Warrior

written by Parita 12 Comments

I’m a HUGE fan of Purpose Fairy.  It’s one of those websites that makes you think about who you are and why you are here with every single article/post.  And I LOVE that.  So when I saw “Way of the Peaceful Warrior” on the sidebar as a recommended reading, I decided to check it out at the library.

Honestly, all I knew was it’s a spiritual book written by a former gymnast.

Well, I picked it up on Saturday and finished it on Tuesday night.  I kinda liked it a lot!

This is a hard book to review because no two people are going to walk away from it with the same thoughts, feelings, ideas.  However the basic premise is this – a young student gymnast happens to meet a mysterious man one night at a gas station and his life changes forever.  He can no longer go back to being a college student caught up in the ups and downs of everyday life.  He’s forced to “wake up” and see the world and his own life in a different light.

One huge lesson I gained from this book is that we must try our very hardest to live in the present.  The past is gone, and there’s absolutely nothing any one of us can do about that.  And the future is one big unknown, and no matter how hard we try we can’t predict it.  All we have is now.  This is easier said than done, but I’ve found that I’m the happiest when focused on the present.  When I go back in time or jump to the future, I’m robbing myself of the only sure thing I have…the now.

Another relatively simple concept that stuck with me had to do with keeping a sense of humor whenever possible, especially when it comes to yourself.  I’m trying to do this more in different situations (marriage, friendships, work) because I find that it helps give me the strength to move forward.  And honestly, I’ve learned that taking myself seriously is a lot of work.  It’s much easier to laugh at my imperfections and quirks because they they make me who I am.  And who I am is enough.

Vulnerability is another topic that’s addressed over and over again throughout the story.  We are so afraid to get hurt, so afraid to let others see us as anything other than perfect, so afraid to let our guard down.  And that’s really ironic because the only way to live life is to open yourself up to all that it has to offer, including the not so great stuff.   Vulnerability is true courage and without exposing it and owning it for ourselves, we’re only half living.

My short review/lessons learned don’t even begin to scratch the surface with what this book can offer to people who read it with an open, clear mind.  Like I said before, no two people are going to walk away with the same a-ha moments, but that’s the beauty of it.  In fact, this book may not be for everyone.  But if you’ve even once questioned your purpose or thought about life’s true meaning, this book may be worth checking out.

And with that, I leave you with my favorite quote from the book…

“Wake up! If you knew for certain you had a terminal illness–if you had little time left to live–you would waste precious little of it! Well, I’m telling you…you do have a terminal illness: It’s called birth. You don’t have more than a few years left. No one does! So be happy now, without reason–or you will never be at all.”

Mind Dump

written by Parita 13 Comments

1.  It’s Friday.  Enough said.

2.  Certain parts of this week’s Modern Family actually freaked me out a little.  A comedy scared me.  Only me!

3.  I’m going home for a week in November!  And yes, I said “I” and not “we.”  Vishnu will not be coming. Sad smile  His school scheduled comprehensive finals starting the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.  SO DUMB!

4.  Everyone needs to follow Thought Catalog and Uber Facts on Twitter.  Just know this though – your overall productivity will be impacted.  Consider yourself warned.

5.  This is so me.

6.  Vishnu introduced me to Coursera the other night, and because I’m a nerd, I signed up for two classes – Fundamentals of Human Nutrition and Introduction to Philosophy.  By the way, these classes are FREE!  However, there is real coursework involved – readings, papers, etc.  I plan on doing the work, but it’s nice to know that there is no real punishment for missing an assignment.  Anyway, I’ll let y’all know how it goes as these particular classes aren’t slated to start until early 2013.  The only downside is that sometimes courses are cancelled based on the professor’s schedule.  Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen.

7.  Next Tuesday Vishnu and I are going here for dinner.  Woot woot!

8.  I am working from home today because the weather is ridiculous.  I don’t feel like dealing with wind, rain, and crazy drivers.  No thank you!  For anyone that lives on the eastern seaboard…be safe!  Hurricane Sandy looks like one tough cookie.

9.  My favorite someecard…

What I’m Looking Forward To

written by Parita 4 Comments

HAPPY FRIDAY!  I thought the weekend would never get here.  We don’t have much going on, as you’re about to see, and that’s exactly why I’m excited.  It’s the little things.

I’m thinking tonight will be a good night to watch a couple episodes of The West Wing (a GREAT show by the way) and eat a simple meal at home.  I’m thinking a glass of wine and a plate of cheese, bread, and olives would be absolutely perfect.  A great way to kick off the weekend!

I’ll be on my own for a good portion of Saturday since Vishnu will be attending a conference at school.  My to do list is quite long – clean (so I don’t have to do it on Sunday), sort through paperwork, go to the library, go to Bed Bath & Beyond and TJ Maxx (a must!), make a dent in thank you card writing (my hand hurts just thinking about it), etc.  As you can see, I have nothing of great importance going on Saturday – phew!

And if all goes well, there may be some napping involved.  We’ll see.

Sunday may actually be my favorite day of all.  We are going to a chocolate festival!  Yes, you read that right, a festival full of chocolate…my heaven!  I’ll share more next week, but until then, here’s a little highlight from the Miami Herald.

The Festival of Chocolate, named Top Ten Chocolate Festivals in the USA, is the Ultimate All-Chocolate Event with an incredible Vendor Showcase featuring the best local and regional chocolatiers and confection companies; demonstrations by world renown pastry chefs, chocolate and wine pairings; hands-on classes for the home chef; Kids-4-Chocolate workshop; crazy chocolate contests; an adult chocolate clubhouse; chocolate game show stage; live professional chocolate showpiece competition and featuring the Cocoa Couture Fashion Show on The Festival of Chocolate Yumway.

And finally, I’m excited about going to see an Orthopedic doctor next week.  I’ve been putting this off for way too long (3 ish years).  And even though my knees haven’t been giving me as much trouble as before, they still act up.  I just want to know what’s going on and fix whatever it is before it gets worse.  Fingers crossed that it’s not a big deal.

Well, that’s what’s going on for me – not terribly exciting but just what I need!  Tell me – what are you looking forward to in the coming days, weeks, or even months?
