A Week’s Worth of Happenings

written by Parita 3 Comments

Well hello there!  While I can’t say that my blogging break was unintentional, I missed this space and am glad to be back!

It’s been quite a week for sure.  We moved (!), we went to a Cubs game, and we attended a newborn CPR class.  That’s just the stuff we did.  Then there’s all the stuff that happened.

Let me tell you allll about it!

The biggest thing…WE MOVED!  And it’s done and over with <– the BEST part!  I will say that it was the easiest move we’ve experienced (and we’ve experienced four in the last five years), as all we had to do was take our stuff about 30-40 feet across the hall.  Thank goodness for awesome friends who willingly gave up their Saturday morning/afternoon to help us out!

While the move was logistically easy, it was not so easy on this almost 33 week preggo body.  My body ached like its never ached before!  In fact, I took two 2.5 hour naps on both Saturday and Sunday.  Like I said, thankfully it’s done and over with!  Now, it’s time to nest and really prepare for our baby boy!

The next biggest thing…we went to a Cubs game with my sister and BIL and had a blast!  The weather, while warm, definitely left all of us with itchy eyes and noses.  The pollen count combined with the wind made for an interesting outing.  My poor sister must’ve sneezed a thousand times! Regardless, it was fun cheering the team on, high-fiving everyone around us, and singing ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”

Cubs Game 2017

Family time at Cubs game 2017

This particular game was also special because our nickname for the baby is Kubs/Kubbie (with a K because of our last name).  We found out we were pregnant when the Cubs were in the World Series, so it only felt fitting!  Essentially, this was Kubs’ first Cubs game!  🙂

Vishnu and I also attended a newborn/child CPR class last week.  While Vishnu’s already certified in all of this stuff, I definitely learned a lot of useful information.  I just pray we never have to use it.

So that’s the stuff that we did.  In terms of stuff that happened to me/us…

My feet/ankles were super swollen on Friday.  Like the biggest I’ve seen them!  Naturally, I grabbed a pair of compression socks to help with the issue. I thought I grabbed a black pair, as I was wearing black leggings.  But nope.  I definitely grabbed and wore a navy pair that totally clashed with my OOTD (outfit of the day).  I wouldn’t have minded at all except for the fact that I had a doctor’s appointment, and of course, that’s where I realized my mistake.  My excuse (for everything) –> #impregnant.

Mismatched compression socks

I inadvertently ended up scaring the AT&T technician that came by on Wednesday to set everything up for us.  I made my way over to the new apartment a little before when he was expected to arrive.  When I walked into the unit, I saw that our bedroom door was closed and literally shaking. I freaked out, grabbed my keys, and ran out, ultimately running into technician as I opened the door.  Of course, I screamed…which made him scream. HOT MESS EXPRESS I tell you!  I apologized for my crazy, told him I thought someone/thing was in my bedroom, and asked if he would take a look. Bless this man because he did exactly what I asked and even checked our closets and bathroom for me…you know, just in case!  #impregnant…?  No, I’m just Par!

I’m pretty sure I’m forgetting a pretty funny [to me] Vishnu story!  We had quite a few moments this past week that ranged from “aww I love you” to “aww I can’t help but roll my eyes.”  Moving stress, and in general the third trimester (for both the mom and dad-to-be), will do that to you!

Anyways, have a great Tuesday!

A Milk and Cookies Date [5]

written by Parita 12 Comments

This milk and cookies date is very much needed, so thank you for joining me!  So much has happened since the last time we talked.  Of course, there was my sister’s wedding (!) which was absolutely amazing.  And now it’s time to M-O-V-E!  This may surprise many of you given my type-A nature, but we are totally slacking on the packing part of the moving equation.  Like big time!  But we’ll get to that in our catch-up…

So with that, let’s have some milk and cookies…

If were having milk and cookies!

I’m certain the Orlando attack is on both of our minds.  It’s all just so sad and senseless.  I don’t think I’ll ever be able to wrap my head around how someone could hurt so many innocent people.  When something horrific like this happens, my go-to emotions are anger and sadness.  And while this is no different, I’m trying my best to focus on the stories about the helpers.  Those who put their lives on the line to save as many people as possible. The helpers give me hope that no matter how bad it gets, the goodness of humanity will ALWAYS shine brighter than the hatred and intolerance of a few.

And because we’re choosing to focus on the good, we’d continue on with general life updates.

I’d tell you about Vishnu’s intern graduation this past weekend and how it was a lot of fun hanging out with everyone one last time.  It’s so bittersweet because while Vishnu’s moving on to his chosen field and taking his career forward, he’s made so many good friends in this short time.  I keep reminding him that it’s not ‘goodbye’ but rather, ‘see you soon!’

Looking back on it all, this year has been easier than I initially thought it would be.  First of all, the past 12 months feel like the came and went in a flash…seriously!  Also, I’ve seen Vishnu grow so much from an uncertain doctor to someone who really owns his profession and his knowledge. Seeing that change and evolution was a true highlight for me!

Next, you’d ask me about how the packing is going.  To that I would respond with an ‘ummm’ because it hasn’t gone very far.  Our apartment is a disaster, but we’ll get there eventually…we have to!  Over the weekend, I kept saying the word ‘pack’ and Vishnu kept saying the words ‘later’ and ‘relax.’  That brings us to today and now I’m anything but relaxed, but I’m not letting it stress me out too much.  It’ll all get done, and we’ll be in Chicago before we know it!  Woo-sah!

We’d then move on to the topic of fitness because I’m sick of talking about this damn move!  I’d tell you that I’m trying to move as much as possible.  I wouldn’t call a lot of what I do a full-blown workout, but I do what I can when I can.  Again, I’m trying not to stress about things that don’t really matter right now.  While it would be wonderful to fit in a 45 minute workout every day, I don’t always have the time or energy.  I’m really trying hard to stick to a “do the best you can every day and don’t sweat the small stuff” mantra.  So far, so good!

Food and exercise go hand in hand, so we would of course talk about that next.  I’d tell you that this is the week of eating whatever we have on hand (eggs, oatmeal, frozen food, etc.).  We did, however, have an amazing dining experience at Bern’s Steakhouse last week.  It was the perfect celebratory meal (5 year engagement anniversary, the end of intern year, and the end to FL living).  We started with soup and salad (one of the best Vishnu’s ever had!).  Then we moved on to some pretty fabulous entrees (fish for Vishnu, a perfectly composed vegetarian dish for me, and truffle mac n’ cheese to share!).  We ended our meal with music, coffee, and a peanut butter truffle dessert.  You guys…it was perfection!  I love that my husband loves food as much as I do!  It makes for some fun adventures. 🙂

I know this was somewhat of a short date!  Hopefully I’ll have more exciting updates to share next month.  Before we part ways, I’d warn you that I may disappear again for a bit until we’re a little more settled in Chicago.  But as always, I’ll try my best to keep up with some of my social feeds (Facebook, Instagram, and/or Snapchat (username – myinnershakti)).

Until next time…oh and wish us luck on the M-O-V-E!!

Tell me what you’ve been up to!

No Words

written by Parita 9 Comments

I honestly have no idea how to put into words what I’ve been thinking/feeling all weekend.  All I know is that my thoughts and prayers are with those that were affected by the horrific act of violence in Newtown.  I pray that with time they find the strength, love and peace needed to move forward, and that they always find comfort in the memories of their loved ones.

While I can’t find the words to articulate the heaviness in my heart, I wanted to share a song written about Newtown that I happened to find.  It sums up what I’m sure many of us have been thinking over the past few days.

Standing With You
by John Ciambriello

Watching the news
Pictures are words
Tears I’m not holding in

Three of my own
I can’t comprehend
For you, what a day it’s been

We’re standing with you
Because your heart is overwhelmed
Feels like there’s nothing we can do
But we’re trying on your shoes
We may never understand
But know this much is true
We are standing with you
Standing with you

Miles away
Safe in my home
I wish I could be with you

A message of love
Finding the words to say
From a friend you never knew

Have a good Monday.  And please be sure to spread love and kindness wherever you go.  The world needs it…lots and lots of it.

Back to the Grind

written by Parita 11 Comments

First and foremost, I hope y’all had an amazing Thanksgiving holiday full of all the things and people you love!  It’s hard to believe that 2013 is right around the corner.  Where does the time go?

Well, I’m back in Florida and back to the grind.  For some reason, the transition back has been harder than usual.  I miss my family a lot!  Good thing I’ll be seeing them again for Christmas when Vishnu and I head back to Georgia.  Very much looking forward to that.

I figure most of you are having a hard time getting back into the swing of things as well, so I thought I would share some random/inspirational/funny/silly things to make your day a little brighter!

A little more serious to start off with (LOVE this quote)…

To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.
Arundhati Roy

Moving onto some funny things I found…

Funny Friendship Ecard: I appreciate your friendship so much that if we ever got into a fist fight I'd totally try my best to avoid your face.

Funny Birthday Ecard: May you live to be so old that your driving terrifies people.

And finally, a funny story from Saturday night…

After Vishnu picked me up from the airport, we headed to Lime Fresh for dinner.  I ordered my usual vegetarian taco salad and picked out what I thought were the three salsas I usually get.  Before digging into my salad, I poured on all three salsas.  With the first bite I was reaching for water and telling Vishnu that they put something spicy in my salad.  After a few more bites I declared that I couldn’t eat anymore.  Vishnu took one look at the empty salsa containers and asked if I was sure I didn’t take the habanero salsa by accident.  Umm…that’s EXACTLY what I did.  In my defense, it looked just like the salsa verde!  When one of the servers came by and asked if everything was ok, I explained my stupid mistake.  To my surprise, she brought me another salad.  Talk about excellent customer service.  It wasn’t even the restaurant’s fault!  Well, I learned my lesson the hard way (my stomach was on fire the rest of the night).  Never again will I even go near the habanero salsa!

Hope one of these made you smile!  Have a great Monday. Smile

Mind Dump

written by Parita 13 Comments

1.  It’s Friday.  Enough said.

2.  Certain parts of this week’s Modern Family actually freaked me out a little.  A comedy scared me.  Only me!

3.  I’m going home for a week in November!  And yes, I said “I” and not “we.”  Vishnu will not be coming. Sad smile  His school scheduled comprehensive finals starting the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.  SO DUMB!

4.  Everyone needs to follow Thought Catalog and Uber Facts on Twitter.  Just know this though – your overall productivity will be impacted.  Consider yourself warned.

5.  This is so me.

6.  Vishnu introduced me to Coursera the other night, and because I’m a nerd, I signed up for two classes – Fundamentals of Human Nutrition and Introduction to Philosophy.  By the way, these classes are FREE!  However, there is real coursework involved – readings, papers, etc.  I plan on doing the work, but it’s nice to know that there is no real punishment for missing an assignment.  Anyway, I’ll let y’all know how it goes as these particular classes aren’t slated to start until early 2013.  The only downside is that sometimes courses are cancelled based on the professor’s schedule.  Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen.

7.  Next Tuesday Vishnu and I are going here for dinner.  Woot woot!

8.  I am working from home today because the weather is ridiculous.  I don’t feel like dealing with wind, rain, and crazy drivers.  No thank you!  For anyone that lives on the eastern seaboard…be safe!  Hurricane Sandy looks like one tough cookie.

9.  My favorite someecard…

10.  Enjoy the weekend!

My Truths

written by Parita 21 Comments

Colleen wrote a great blog post today about her true statements.  Since I read her blog pretty regularly, it was fun to learn about the things that make her who she is.  In fact, I loved her idea so much that I’m stealing it!  Thanks, Colleen!!

Here are some of my truths in no particular order…

I 110% believe that Vishnu is my soul mate.

I absolutely cannot stand slow drivers in the left lane.

I am superstitious.

I am kind of obsessed with makeup – not necessarily wearing it, just owning it.

I love to laugh and find myself doing so a lot, often at myself.

I regret not taking Spanish classes in college.

I sleep with my eyes half open and it freaks people out.

I would do absolutely anything for my family.

I love a good love story.

I am spiritual.

I love to vacuum but hate folding laundry.

I am obsessed with my iPhone…to the point that it’s starting to irritate me.

I can’t stand mean people, especially those who know they are being mean and do it anyways.

I love Jillian Michaels and even more so after discovering her podcasts.

I am the worst surprise keeper in the world.

I am super emotional and will cry at the drop of a hat.

I think brown M&Ms taste more chocolaty.

I am quickly learning that I dislike Florida drivers…with a strong passion.

I am so grateful for the parents that I have.

I want to travel the world.

I am afraid of bugs.

I think Saturday is the best day of the week.

I love my in-laws – not something many people can say.

I could spend hours walking up and down the aisles of any grocery store.

I think my friends are some of the weirdest people I know and that’s why I love them.

I love annoying my husband…until he returns the favor of course.

I am obsessed with quotes and love finding new ones.

I try to be the best me everyday.

What are some of your truths!?

Lucky Duck or Crazy Pants?

written by Parita 6 Comments

Do you believe in luck?

If I were to be honest, I would have to say that for the most part I don’t.  I believe in hard work and the whole “right place at the right time” thing.

However, last weekend when Vishnu and I were at a Student Advocates dinner, I won a raffle, and it made me question my belief.  Let me explain.

There were probably 40 people at this dinner and about 12 prizes to be raffled off.  As soon as the dean’s wife called out that the raffle was about to begin, I pulled out our tickets.  I then looked at Vishnu and said, “Watch my number be the first one drawn.”  And guess what, it was.  I know, I know.  The odds weren’t that crazy but still.  I called it!

The entire way home and then some Vishnu and I talked about how crazy the whole situation was.  Call us crazy, but we were a little spooked.

So then, fast forward to Monday morning.  We stopped to fill up gas on our way home from Venice.  I asked Vishnu if I should buy a lottery ticket because, you know, I’m lucky!  He laughed and said go ahead.  I went in and bought a Powerball ticket.  I also bought two scratch off lottery tickets just for the heck of it (or because I let the raffle situation get to my head).  When I got in the car, I showed Vishnu my purchases and pulled out a quarter.  I started scratching away and quickly realized that I WON!!!

I won four dollars!  I know it sounds completely ridiculous, but I was excited.  I headed back into the convenience store to cash in my winning ticket.  And when the nice lady handed me $4, I handed it right back and selected two more scratch tickets.

I guess lightening really doesn’t strike the same place twice because that’s pretty much where my lucky streak ended.

I still have the Powerball ticket though…

But seriously, every now and then, when things like this happen, I start to think about whether or not luck is real.  Are some people really just lucky?

Food for thought on this lovely Thursday!

Oh and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY DADDY!!!  If I win some money tonight, you are going to get one heck of a birthday present!!

Do you believe in luck?  Have you ever won the lottery – big or small?
