I’m decent at coming up with meal ideas for lunch and dinner. Let’s just say that no one starves around these parts. Snacks? Not so much. I mean how many apples can a person eat. Or carrots and hummus. Or string cheese. I often find Vishnu standing in front of the refrigerator or pantry looking hangry. Wait that’s me. I admit…I have a snack problem.
Luckily for all of us I think I’ve found a solution.
The main star in my new found snack love…
Now, if you’re anything like me, you probably think that dates look like cockroaches. I know that’s a gross image, but I can’t help it!
Another thing about these particular dates – they’re not the popular Sun maid kind. I found this tub at Costco for something like $6.59, and these non-brand name dates taste just fine.
So about that “best little snack.” I’ve been meaning to try Katie’s Cookie Dough Babies recipe for a while now. I think my hesitation was due to the fact that dates look like the nastiest insect on the planet. Eeek!
However, once you get over that hump, you’ll be the happiest person ever because these bad boys are so good…
And so simple to make. I whipped up two batches in five minutes.
The best part…they taste kind of like fudge – no joke! They’re so good in fact, that a few may disappear in the rolling process. Quality control.
I usually follow Katie’s recipes very closely but made a couple of changes this time around. I used almonds instead of walnuts and 1/4 cup of chocolate chips instead of the handful that she suggests.
I’m not sure it’s a good thing that these are so easy to make. We’ll see… I’ve been able to manage some level of self control so far. Honestly, who knew chocolate and dates paired so well together. Dangerous I tell you.
Bottom line – make these “snack balls” now and thank me later for introducing you to this awesome little recipe.
What’s a newly discovered snack that you’re loving right now? Do you like dates?
YUM! These sounds so delicious! 🙂
They are SO addictive. You can’t just stop at one!
Thease sound and looks sooo yummy and I love dates, so I guess you wil be making these on the 22nd!!! right my Sunshine? 🙂
YES! I’m bringing all my equipment with me. 🙂
Hi Parita,
These look delicious and can’t wait to try them as they are soo healthy! Noticed that the link on the sentence “i usually follow Katie’s…” is broken..Request you to fix that..
The awesome part is that they are so delicious that you forget they’re healthy! That’s the best. 🙂
And the link should now work. Thanks for letting me know! Hope you’re doing well!
I’m rediscovering hummus. Went on a huge kick a couple of years ago and then abandoned it completely. For shame!
Hummus…yum! There are so many kinds now too. I bought an olive one the other day – so good!
I love dates! My mom used to always buy them from Costco. Maybe she’ll have some around when we go visit for Christmas. 🙂
If she does, make this recipe, especially if you love dates!
Be honest here… do they realllly taste like fudge? Deciding whether to try them out or not… 🙂
Yes!!! I asked Vishnu before posting just to make sure it wasn’t just me! He said yes. 🙂
Ohh these do look good and I’m sure they taste great as they contain dates. I love dates, especially topped with peanut butter or goat cheese! I used to eat them quite a bit a while back as a pre-workout snack and they gave me such a great energy boost!
I am not a big date person by itself but I make date truffles occasionally and they are guilt free and taste delicious. http://www.foodpleasureandhealth.com/2012/06/guilt-free-truffles-redux-recipe.html and I have to admit I have a huge snack problem. I recently am hooked with seaweed crisps.
We are always on the lookout for healthy treats so these may make an appearance in our snack roundup soon! I love that they’re so quick to make 🙂
I’ve been finding myself eating more and more these days – not huge meals but just constant snacking throughout the day. It’s quite funny, especially since I’ve only eaten like 1/2 hr ago! I should make these to keep withe me (trust me – a cranky, hungry pregnant woman with no food in sight is not fun to be around :P). Yum!
hahaha.. just thought of a thing; when I lived in Spain I learned that they often call dates for cucarachas (spanish for cockroaches, but I guess you`ve already figured that;-)).
my favourite snack would be raisins and cashews:)
I love dates and usually just eat then straight up. They are great with a cup of tea/coffee! These look even better. 🙂
I’m not a huge fan of dates, but I don’t mind. Unfortunately they remind me of cockroaches too. I haven’t tried Katie’s recipes… Will have to consider doing so. 🙂
I like dates a lot, but rarely ever buy them. I think the appearance may have something to do with it for me too 🙂 I love them stuffed with mascarpone cheese.
