Being married to a medical school student is not always the easiest thing.  On the one hand, I love being an integral part of my husband’s dream.  On the other hand, adjustment is the name of the game around here.  Between Vishnu’s intense school schedule and my busy work schedule, we’re starting to become very go with the flow type people.  I know!  Can you believe it?  Me?  Go with the flow?  I can hardly believe it either.

One of the biggest adjustments I’ve had to make is having both of us at home but not really communicating (only when Vishnu’s holed up in his “study room” aka the guest room).  I try not to bother him too much, but there’s probably room for improvement!  However, I kind of knew that would be a regular thing since med school is no joke.

What I didn’t anticipate was Vishnu sleeping in the guest room the night before an exam.  While I totally understand the reason (he stays up well into the night studying and gets up early to review), it was still kind of weird to be in the same apartment and not sleep in the same bed.

Just as I thought I had a handle on this test-eve “ritual,” there was an incident…

Last Sunday night I headed to bed thinking I had the room all to myself.  I didn’t think I would see Vishnu until the morning, so I said goodnight and hopped into bed.

Well, around 4:30 am the next morning, Vishnu decided to come use the bathroom attached to our bedroom to brush his teeth.  Why he needed to brush his teeth at that time, I don’t know.  It’s not even that.  It’s that he isn’t exactly the quietest person.  While I don’t have much of an indoor voice, he doesn’t know how to tiptoe, especially around his sleeping wife.  So, after he was done brushing his teeth or whatever, he swung the door open, light still on, and walked out.  I was facing the bathroom, so the light woke me up.  And as soon as I opened my eyes, I saw “an intruder” standing by my bed!  Here’s what happened next…

Parita: “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!  Who are you?!?”
Vishnu: “OMG!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!  It’s me…Vishnu!!”
Parita: “Vishnu!?!?  You scared me!!!!  Geez!”
Vishnu: “Sorry babe…”

And just like that, he left.  WHAT!?

The next morning I woke up feeling rather annoyed.  After I got ready for work, I walked into the guest room to give Vishnu a piece of my mind.  But when I saw him studying away, I felt bad so I left him alone.  I did bring it back up in the evening.  I asked why he had to brush his teeth at 4:30 in the morning.  And he said, “You wouldn’t?  That’s gross.”  Hmpf!

If married life and living with Vishnu doesn’t make me a more “go with the flow” type person, I don’t know what will.

  1. I love this one!!! it makes me laugh every time I think about it. Now just remember that “go with the flow” is the name of the game, and you’ll be happy forever…love you so much 🙂

  2. I wish that I was more of a go with the flow type of person too. It’s better to be like that before you have kids because then parenting is 10 X easier. I wish I’d known!!

  3. awww.. it’s so nice reading your blog after married life. welcome. i’m definitely very quiet when my husband is sleeping, and he does the same for me, but i’m sure in the beginning he pissed me off. he’ll get the hang of it. 🙂
