A Successful Move

written by Parita 22 Comments

Hello from Fort Lauderdale!  I’m happy to report that my move down here went better than expected and was not really stressful at all.  In fact, my dad and I had a great time.  I can’t put into words how thankful I am that he was able to fly down and help me this weekend.  He’s pretty awesome!  Smile

Since I’m kind of neurotic and like to do things well in advance, there wasn’t much left to do except wait for the movers on Saturday, so my dad and I spent a lot of Friday just hanging out.  We had a late lunch at Chipotle, which was great not only because I love Chipotle but also because this was my dad’s first time eating there.  Can you believe it?  He’s now a huge fan!  A bit later we decided to make an impromptu trip to St. Pete beach.  My dad was amazed that I had never been before, especially because I only lived about 15 minutes minutes away.  I kind of felt like a dummy!

On Saturday morning, we picked up the U-Haul, and a short while later, the movers arrived to load my stuff.  In less than an hour, we were on our way to Fort Lauderdale.  The drive took a bit longer than usual because my dad gave me very specific instructions to go slow so that he could follow me.  I lost him a little after the half way point.  I kind of knew that plan was bound to fail.  Whoops!

Since the apartment officially became ours earlier in the week, moving in was pretty easy.  We unloaded my car and then waited for the movers to come unload the U-Haul.  Again, the whole unloading process took less than an hour.  At this point, I breathed a huge sigh of relief.  The move was officially over!  I’m pretty sure I slept better that night than I have in a LONG time.  It felt so good!

On Sunday, my dad and I spent most of the day unpacking boxes.  Our goal was to set up the kitchen, and I’m happy to report that we were successful.

My favorite room in the apartment!

A not so well stocked pantry.  Ha!

The rest of the apartment is pretty bare, except for a couch in the living room and a bed in the guest room.  I’ll definitely share more as we move along in the decorating process.

Well, that’s all I’ve been up to over the past few days.  Vishnu has one more exam, and then we’re off to Atlanta later this week!!  Yay!  As soon as we get back, we’ll be heading to Purvi’s first wedding event!  I can’t wait for all the fun to come over the next month.

When was your last big move?  Did you hire movers or did you do it all on your own?

CONGRATS on the move, P- I’m so excited for you :)! The kitchen looks great- having a ‘nice’ kitchen really adds a whole new kind of joy to cooking! Even though moving to Mumbai was a big move, I was lucky in that we still have our place in London which my bro lives in. There wasn’t much stress of leaving things behind- I knew that between family/friends traveling between London & Mumbai (and my trips back), I could always get it eventually!

Thanks, K! It’s so nice that you get to go back and forth between two great cities. AND you don’t have to worry about packing much! That’s the way to do it!!!

I’m glad the move went well!

I hate moving, but seem to do it pretty often from one apartment to the next. Eh. It’s like my version of spring cleaning?

The last time I moved from the ‘burbs to the city, I used movers. Best decision ever. They did in two hours what I would have spent an entire day doing. WORTH it.

So glad the move went well for you. Moving is not fun, ever; unless it’s a brand new start….so exciting!! It sounds like things are slowly coming together, wishing you the best hun. XX

Thanks, Krystal! You’re right, moving is never fun, BUT this time it actually was. I guess it’s because this is mine AND Vishnu’s first place together…exciting!

Congratulations on your move , your kitchen is so nice. It looks similar to mine, except I have lighter granite and cabinets, but I prefer darker. I’m so jealous you have a pantry! So excited for you guys.

The last time I moved was into my current apt – 3 years ago a couple months after the wedding. We hired movers and it wasn’t as expensive as I thought… I kinda prefer that so I don’t have to do anything. 🙂 I’m dreading leaving though cuz I have so much junk to pack. 🙁

Thank you! I’m excited to have a fairly large pantry – they’ve always been small in my other apartments.

And trust me, when we move out of this place, it’s going to be so tough. I had so much stuff just on my own this time. With Vishnu also in the picture, I can only imagine how much stuff we’ll have together.

Congrats! I moved into my condo without movers because I was buying mostly new furniture. Never again though! I was sore for days and I’m pretty sure my friends hated me. 🙂

Thanks, Laura! Luckily, we didn’t have too much furniture…just a ton of boxes! And I agree, movers are the best way to go…for everyone involved!

I’m living in an apartment that is right above Chipotle next year! I’ve been craving it so much but I’ll stay away from it until the semester starts because I know I’ll be there a little toooo often.

    That beach is so pretty!

OMG! I’m jealous! I think my bank account would hate me if I were you. I’d be there ALL the time. 🙂

We always hire movers when it comes to the big things, but we like to move the smaller items ourselves.

That’s the way to do it! We packed most of my smaller items in my car, which made things much more efficient. Thanks for stopping by!!
