A Creed to Live By

written by Parita 14 Comments

HAPPY FRIDAY, friends!!!

After work, I got the urge to look through my old journals – all 5 of them… Smile

journals 003

I was hoping to find an interesting entry to share from back in the day.  And I didn’t find just one – I found 3.  The awesome part is that each one is from a different time in my life – 2000, 2003, and 2008.  The old Parita was a pretty wise girl! Smile

But then…I found something else I wanted to share.  Something that touched me when I found it a few years ago, something I forgot I even saved.  It’s called A Creed to Live By, and it’s truly beautiful and inspirational.

Don’t worry, Parita’s original journal entries will be shared…there’s no rush!  But until then, please enjoy this and have a wonderful Friday night!

A Creed to Live By

Don’t undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others,

It is because we are different that each of us is special.

Don’t set goals by what other people deem important,

Only you know what is best for you.

Don’t take for granted the things closest to your heart,

Cling to them as you would your life, for without them life is meaningless.

Don’t let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or the future.

By living one day at a time, you live all the days of your life.

Don’t give up when you still have something to give.

Nothing is really over…until the moment you stop trying.

Don’t be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect,

It is the fragile thread that binds us to each other.

Don’t be afraid to encounter risks,

It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.

Don’t shut love out of your life by saying it’s impossible to find.

The quickest way to receive love is to give love.

The fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly,

And the best way to keep love is to give it wings.

Don’t dismiss your dreams.  To be without dreams is to be without hope.

To be without hope is to be without purpose.

Don’t run through life so fast you forget where you’ve been,

But also know where you’re going.

Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored every step of the way.

Who’s the Fairest of Them All?

written by Parita Leave a Comment

This post has nothing to do with Snow White, folks!  Sorry!  But it does have something to do with the fair skin myth that exists within the Indian community.

001

See, while the Western world really admires tan skin and enjoys laying out and going to tanning salons, the Eastern world relishes fair, creamy skin tones and avoids the sun like it’s the plague.  Ok ok, I may be exaggerating a bit, but I know from experience that there is a slight bias in the Indian community towards fair skin.

And I’m just going to stop right here and say that the view I am about to present in this post is MY OWN.  I’ve read a number of articles about this issue and have formed my own opinion.  This is not meant to offend anyone.  I promise.

When I was younger, I remember my aunt advising my mom to rub a chickpea flour and milk mixture on my face so that my skin would stay light (my mom only followed through a few times before she too realized how ridiculous the whole thing was).  I also remember various female family members talking about washing their bodies with a lemon juice mixture in order to achieve lighter skin tones.  For a long time, I remember thinking that the only way to be was fair.  I sought out the shade like it was my job, I scrubbed the hell out of my body thinking that would help me achieve my goal of being lighter, and I used Indian beauty creams that promised “creamy, smooth, light skin.”  WHAT!?  Why did I subject myself to this?  Was my family crazy?!  I won’t answer that last question.  LOL!

A few years ago, I came across an article in a local Indian magazine (Khabar) that talked about the fair beauty myth and the Indian culture…it automatically caught my eye.  The article addressed the bias that is evident in the Indian fashion and movie industries, as indicated by models being rejected for “being five shades too dark” and actresses being rejected for certain roles in movies but then being called back for the sinister, vengeful roles.  You won’t believe this, but there is actually an entire Indian soap opera about a beautiful girl that supposedly did something to shame her family, and now her character is 10 shades darker and a maid for some rich family.  Not.cool.at.all!  In fact, these models and actresses were (are) subject to the same things I was as a kid – skin lightening creams, home remedies, etc..

BB

This Bollywood actress, Bipasha Basu, was once told she would never
make it in the Indian film industry because of her skin tone.

The irony of the situation is that a lot of these darker toned women are gaining international attention for their beauty, while people in their own country are shunning them.  The other piece of irony is that a lot of the goddesses from Indian mythology are portrayed as being dark and lustrous; however, they are known for their beauty, purity, and feminine power.

Even to this day, I have friends and family members who will not go and sit in the sun in the fear that they will “get dark.”  I know women who wear makeup that is clearly about three shades too light for them.

With everything else that we have to worry about in life, does “not getting/appearing dark” have to be at the top of the priority list?  NO!  It makes no sense!  And this frustrates me so much because I truly do believe that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, skin tones, etc.  And more than that, beauty really is something that radiates from the inside out.

I know that this whole fair skin myth evolved out of historical events, the Indian caste system, blah, blah, blah, but wake up, people, it’s the 21st century!!!!  The color of your skin is not a reflection of your self-worth, your intelligence, how good of a person you are, etc.  IT DOESN’T MATTER!!!

Before I go, I just want to stress something.  I truly believe the Indian culture is a beautiful one that values a lot of wonderful things – family, education, faith, fun Smile, etc.  However, just like every other culture out there, this one is not without its flaws.  And based on things I have read, India is not an outlier when it comes to the fair skin myth – other Asian countries also hold the same beliefs.

With that, I can’t wait to sit out by the pool in an attempt to darken my own skin by 2-3 shades!  Take that, beauty myth!  Smile with tongue out  Who’s with me!?!?

Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger

written by Parita Leave a Comment

Hi friends!  I hope you had a fabulous weekend and some awesome weather wherever you were!

As I alluded to the other day, I participated in Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger yesterday.  Project Bread is dedicated to alleviating, preventing, and ultimately ending hunger in Massachusetts.  Such a noble cause!  And I’m not the only one who thinks so…it was estimated that there were about 40,000 walkers.  Wowsers!

I walked with two of my coworkers.  It was great because all three of us are speed demons as demonstrated by our time – 20 miles in 5 hours and 25 minutes!!!

Me and Courtney ready to get our walk on!

Ready...Set...Go!

Fried dough?! French fries?! Hehe.

Halfway there! 🙂

Walking along the Charles River!

With about 5-6 miles left to go, our lower bodies were starting to get very tired and sore, but we kept on trekking.  I think these signs helped us along…

This fact opened my eyes! I get to pick and choose exactly what I put in my body, while 660,000 people are struggling to put food in their bodies.

So glad this organization exists! $74 million dollars over 4 decades...incredible!

Yay! The finish line is in sight!

20 miles = hungry me!

Well there you have it…my walk recap via pictures!  I am so glad I did this – sore legs, tired feet, and all!  It was a great way to see the city, and more importantly, Project Bread is one step closer to accomplishing it’s mission!  Woo hoo!

I hope y’all are ready for Monday! 🙂

Body Image and Negative Self-Talk

written by Parita Leave a Comment

Can you do me a favor?  Pretty please!  Go to Carrie’s blog at Moves ‘N Munchies and check out her blog post on body image and how women view their bodies.  I love her blog as it is, but I really think this was one of the most powerful blog posts I’ve read in a long time.

I’ve dealt with body image issues for quite a few years now.  I know what it’s like to look in the mirror and hate what you see.  I know what it’s like to compare yourself to every other girl you see.  I know what it’s like to open up a magazine and wish with all your heart that you looked like one of the models or featured actresses.  And I know I’m not alone.  Negative body image is not an easy thing to overcome, but it is possible.  And I don’t think women are the only ones that suffer from this disease.  Yes, it’s a disease.  Trust me.

Over the past year or so, I’ve made a conscious effort to really eliminate negative self-talk  and negative self-thoughts from my life.  I used to roll my eyes when I would read or hear things like, “You really have to love yourself first.”  The old me honestly used to think, “What crap!”  But it’s SO SO SO true.  When you love yourself, you take care of yourself and your needs.  Again, this is not an easy battle to fight, but it’s worth it because I now know that I’m worth it.

Sorry for getting all serious today, but I REALLY feel passionate and strongly about this topic.  Most all of us have dealt with this issue, and it’s not an easy thing to talk about.  So if you will, please do me another favor.  Before going to bed tonight, write down 5 things you love about you.  Save that piece of paper and pull it out whenever you feel that negative self-talk creeping into your thoughts.  Why?  Because YOU are worth it!

Do you or have you ever suffered from this “disease?”  How are you or how did you overcome it?

PAST, present, FUTURE

written by Parita Leave a Comment

Happy Monday (or as happy as Mondays can be)!  By the time I got home from work, I wasn’t as hungry as I usually am – surprise, surprise.  This afforded me the time to make a meal that involved some prep work.  I scoped out the ingredients in my tiny kitchen and decided on pasta.  Tonight’s feature included spinach, zucchini, yellow squash, chickpeas, spicy marinara sauce, and goat cheese – random but hearty and delicious!  Not only did this meal fill me up, but it was super easy to make.

With the pasta boiling off to one side, I sautéed the zucchini and squash in some olive oil.  After a few minutes, I added the spinach and let it wilt.  I then seasoned the veggies with some salt, pepper, and garlic powder (all to taste).  Next, I added the chickpeas and let everything cook through before adding the sauce.  Once the sauce was in, I taste tested and added paprika for some extra heat.  Once the pasta was al dente, it was incorporated with the veggies and sauce.  I topped off my serving with some goat cheese and devoured (just kidding) ate everything one bite at a time…verrrry slooowly!  [Side note: Slow Down Challenge is going well, and I will post more tomorrow.]

Simmering away...

All mixed up

PAST, present, FUTURE

I was reading a few blogs today, and I realized that not everything I post needs to be super positive.  Life’s not perfect, and while I don’t ever want to be Ms. Negative Nancy Blogger, I do want to be real.  With that being said, one of the things that I have always struggled with is living in the past and the future but never in the present.  I can’t imagine I’m the only one out there that’s like this, but oftentimes I find myself constantly wanting to go back in time or jump ahead to some future time when “everything will be perfect.”  When I find myself heading in either of those directions, I try to remind myself that I can’t control the past or the future, but I have full control over my thoughts in the here and now.  Like a lot of things in life, this is easier said than done.  Change and uncertainty have never been my forte, but I like to think that I’m getting better at dealing with both.  But there are always those times when a feeling of sadness washes over me because I am stuck in my own memories or in my thoughts about some unknown future.

After seeing all the devastation in Japan and hearing all the heartbreaking stories on the news, I’ve been thinking about how precious our time on Earth really is.  I can’t even begin to imagine the thoughts running through the minds of those that were and continue to be affected by the earthquake and tsunami.  All I know is that I now want to work harder at getting out of my own thoughts and focus more on living in the present because in the end, it’s all we can really do, and it’s all we really have.

Do you ever find yourself stuck in the past or zooming ahead to the future?  How do get your mind to focus on the present?

Fierce Conversations

written by Parita 4 Comments

Most of you are probably thinking, “What the heck is a FIERCE conversation?”  I was definitely thinking that when I first heard the term.  Well, the last day and a half of training this week was a workshop hosted by a company called Fierce, Inc.  During our time with Fierce, we  talked about different types of conversations, and everything we learned can be applied in the workplace as well as our personal lives.  I’m not going to post every single thing that was presented to us (I’d probably get in trouble for that), but I do want to share some of the key takeaways that I think you would enjoy.

  • Essentially, a fierce conversation is one where you take off all the  masks you wear on a daily basis and make it real, both for you and the other individuals involved.  This is really important because our conversations are our relationships.  This concept confused me at first, but when you really think about it, without real conversations, your relationships are based on nothing but empty words.
  • We learned about 7 “conversation enabling” principles.  Our facilitator told us to pick one to work on and master.  The one I picked is about being present and nowhere else when engaging with someone in a conversation.  I tend to multitask throughout the day and am never 100% present in any situation.  This is not something I am proud of because it’s rude and disrespectful.  I expect those interacting with me to be alert and focused, so I think I owe them the same respect.
  • “Out beyond ideas of right-doing and wrong-doing, there is a field.  I’ll meet you there.”  I love this quote because when I read it for the first time I saw two people stepping out of a black and white background into a colorful one.  I think that instead of shying away from opinions and thoughts that are different from our own, we should try to learn more from those who disagree with us or present a different view from ours.  It’s scary to let go and open ourselves up to other possibilities, but that’s how we grow.
  • “The problem named is the problem solved.” I think this is something we should all remember when addressing issues with others.  When the facilitator said this, I automatically thought of my arguments with Vishnu where I would dance around the issue and not just say what was bothering me.  Ultimately, the real problem would surface, and it would get addressed, but it would have made life so much easier (especially for him) if I had approached him with the real issue.  I’ve gotten much better about this over the past few years, and I think he would agree!  Also, something else that goes along with this is “a careful conversation is a failed conversation because it merely postpones the conversation that wants and needs to take place.”  SO TRUE!
  • Apathy is worse than dislike.  This one really hit home for me.  If you just stop caring about someone or something, that really is worse than you not liking them or it.  I always say that you only tend put forth an effort for things that are worth something to you.  By being and acting apathetic, you are making a statement that you don’t care anymore and that it’s just not worth your time.  Slowly, someone or something that may have meant a lot to you at one time no longer does.  Apathy is a really sad thing to me, so now every time I feel that way, I’m going to stop and think about why, and hopefully that helps me explore my feelings at a deeper level.
  • “There is something within us that responds deeply to those who level with us, who don’t suggest our compromises for us.”  This goes back to my first few points about being real and present when engaging with others.  This quote also, in my opinion, refers to the notion of being honest and truthful.  You are only hurting people when you don’t tell them the truth.  We should always “find a way to say the things that can’t be said.”  And the truth ALWAYS makes an appearance, sooner or later.
  • “Emotional wake is what you remember after I’m gone.  What you feel after I’m gone.  The aftermath, aftertaste, and afterglow.”  My new thing is to really engage with people who elevate me even after our conversation is over.  And I want to do the same for others as well.  How many of us continue to engage with individuals who bring us down, and it may not be their intent but just their style, body language, vocabulary, etc.  If you don’t walk away from them feeling like a better person, why keep engaging?  Something to think about…
  • My new favorite quote – “If you want to see someone in real pain, watch someone who knows who he is and defaults on it on a regular basis.”  Profound and powerful!  I can’t really put into words how I feel when I think about this quote, but the one thought that does come to mind over and over again is if I can’t be myself in every facet of life, why is that and what is holding me back?  Again, something to think about.

I don’t know about y’all, but I love thought-provoking sessions like this one – the kind that make you question yourself and your reality.  We’re all works in progress.  Every situation, interaction, and challenge changes and shapes us, and it’s up to us to make note of the lessons learned and really be an active participant in our own lives.  Sorry for all the words today, but I hope I was able to introduce you to a different way of thinking…that was my real goal.  In my opinion, this information was just too good not to share. 🙂

Thanks!  I promise to be back with pretty pictures soon!

Staying Current on Current Events

written by Parita Leave a Comment

My DC travels continue on, and today included a tour of the Pentagon…very cool!  In case you all are wondering, I am not a secret spy or anything like that.  Actually, it’s quite the opposite – I am a Human Resources professional.  LOL!

We also had a networking event at Clyde’s Willow Creek in Dulles, VA today, which was also fun.  The hors d’oeurves  my manager ordered were delicious.  The veggie options included fresh-baked bread, nuts (candied pecans, almonds, hazelnuts), spicy black bean dip (I have to try to recreate this at home), fresh veggies, and brie.  Check out the good eats…

I love my coworkers!

Oh and for those of you who are wondering, I did go for a power walk this morning. 🙂  I am staying true to my committment!

Current Events

I feel like there has been a lot going on in the world for the past few weeks, and honestly, I know enough to carry on a short conversation but not enough to where I am 100% confident in what I am saying.  This is something I really want to change because the events that are occurring will affect me in the future, and I feel like its my responsiblity to be up to speed on the important issues.  I don’t hesitate for a second to check People.com and peruse the website for a few moments, so I think I need to apply that discipline to CNN.com a little more often than I do.  Don’t get me wrong, I check the CNN website everyday, but recently, I feel that it’s not enough to just read the headlines.  We need to know what the important issues are in the US and around the world.  We are so lucky to have access to hundreds of different news sources.  We have the freedom to form our own opinions, and if we so chose, to do something if we feel strongly about an issue.  Let’s take advantage of that right, educate ourselves, and take a stand.  You may think this is cliché, but we are the future leaders of this country (in some shape or form).  We owe it to the billions of people around the world who don’t have a voice or the freedom to learn about and research current events to take full advantage and learn as much as we can.

Again, I am a full believer in pursuing your passion and interests, but I just feel that it wouldn’t hurt to stay current on the issues that affect us and will continue to affect future generations.

What are your thoughts on current events/issues?  Do you stay on top of the news?
